What would you do if you found out today that you only had a few months to live? I recently had a health scare and was (thankfully) misdiagnosed, so it was a false alarm, but it really put life in perspective for me.

I am a 25-year-old first year associate fresh out of law school at a small civil litigation firm. I went to a good law school and work hard. I’ve been in this position for about 5 months now and I keep messing up. Losing track of tasks. I have never felt dumber. Any advice? Should I be doing better at this point? I’m a licensed attorney!! My firm has always had weekly meetings, and they are now held on zoom since we started working from home. Is it terrible to have my video off? I’m a junior, and I think it probably looks good to have it on, but it is the last thing I want to do at 8am on Mondays.

Partner is exchanging messages with opposing counsel. They agree on a meeting time. Within 3 minutes of that meeting time, I send the invite. I see that within that 3 minute time period I have an email from the Partner with an exasperated tone instructing me to send an invite. Argh

Hi! Does anyone have exp with SSDI cases in MA? Any idea how I can get my client’s doctor to speak with me so I can persuade them to write a medical opinion supporting my client’s disability? Do I need to submit an authorisation for release of PHI or is there another waiver form? I can’t find any other waiver forms online. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve accepted an offer for a non-partner track counsel position at an Amlaw 200 firm. Salary of 300k, expectation of 1800 billable hours. Fully remote. I’ve worked at top regional firms during my 10+ year career. I’m leaving a small book and a solid shot at partner in 3-5 years for the risks of permanent counsel and unknown biglaw bs. Wife and I are prioritizing things other than careers with this move. She’s also able to go fully remote. I’m scared but also excited. Am I crazy?

Transactional Associates (biglaw): At what point should the more admin tasks be taken off your plate? I spend so much time sending signature blocks, prepping sig pages, updating checklists, collating documents, etc. The deals I work on are typically staffed by a partner, me, and a paralegal (who only does title and survey review). I’m in this terrible zone where the partner doesn’t pay attention to my deals because I have it under control, but I don’t have anyone under me I can delegate to

Partners: opinions on efficiency. Should associates genuinely strive to be more efficient if the clients will pay for less efficient time? Is becoming “more efficient” something that isn’t discussed?

I'm a 6th year on my third firm. Every time I left it was for a huge increase in pay and prestige (Am200->Am100->Vault 20). Recently my dream job in a recently IPO'd public company which I own over $100k in stock in opened up, and I want to apply. Should I worry about appearing like a job hopper on my resume?

I am lateraling from an NYC boutique (market salary) to an Am Law 100 in Philly (just below market pay b/c smaller legal market). It will be $7200 alone just to break my lease in NYC (sigh). What is a better predictor of how smart someone is: their UG, or law school? I say UG.

I am giving notice today/tomorrow and I don’t believe the partners are aware of my intentions. I suspect that the conversation might be a bit contentious, but hoping it’s short and without any drama. Any advice for giving notice when the partners might not see it coming?

I need a bit of perspective. I've had an involuntary sabbatical for a while and recently started in-house. I'm a former BigLaw associate. My current pay is not like BigLaw but, still ok (in the lower 6 figures). I'm a 2nd year in a very specialized practice. I don't have any loans, married, no kids. I recently went home (outside of the US), met up with friends who are making money from real estate, stocks, and have a way more laid-back life. I returned wanting a more enjoyable life (contd..)

What do you do when you have a yearly billable requirement of 1950 but are not getting enough work to make 163 hours a month.
