Your insurance sounds terrible. Find someone in network. Be fortunate that you can afford the services. At 25 I wouldn’t have been able to.
Try more natural solutions - e.g meditation

Such problematic comment. And there’s so many people who think like this. I don’t have the energy anymore to educate those who post dumb responses about mental health, so glad there are others left who still do.
Do better. Like, WAY better, next time.
Have you looked into shrooms?
Are you super attached to your therapist? If not, I think you could potentially find an option closer to $100/session. Tia (startup healthcare based in nyc) has $95 sessions that are virtual right now and also has an integrated approach with your general provider. You can also look for therapists with apprentices that are working to get their licensure hours (but still have degrees) and offer cheaper rates.
And is seeing the psychiatrist monthly a must? Definitely don’t want to speak to your experience and/or what you’re being advised by professionals to do, but I always thought psychiatrist was more of a 2-3x a year thing while your therapist is for more regular maintenance.

You’re not being difficult. Do not underestimate if you feel someone is the right fit - especially if you’ve gone to others. Saved my life after many more inexperienced therapists.
Because it takes years of training to become qualified to help you, and it requires one-on-one time

Wrong answer. Why can I go to a surgeon and pay less? Are we really saying a therapy session should be 5-10x the cost of an orthopedist copay vist, for example. It's because mental health is still stigmatized in the US. If it was prioritized it would have similar costs as other specialists, at least within an indivuals own plan.
is this normal? I was paying full price til I hit deductible (not out of pocket max),and now I pay nothing per session
Find someone in network. I pay $16 per session after insurance

I don’t think this is insane. Many excellent psychotherapists aren’t in network because they make pennies. This has been my experience with many therapists. However, look at your insurance, you likely can submit and it is calculated as out of network and you get some reimbursement. I say this having worked with a very talented therapist for over 10 years. Many also do sliding scales which you should also inquire about.
I will say unless you need very specialized psychiatric care you likely CAN find a psychiatrist that is in-network if you’re just looking for a refill on an antidepressant. When I was suffering with anxiety I chose an in network psychiatrist and paid out of pocket for my therapist.

Also you can write off your therapy and psychiatric bills on your taxes as medical expenses if your bills have a diagnosis.
Can you try to find in network providers with lower costs? I know it’s a pain to switch professionals and “start all over” in a sense but if the financial strain is contributing to stress, that’s not good for managing your mental health either.
Psychiatrist visits should be covered by insurance. Even if its out of network, a part will be covered. Call your insurance and ask them why this is not covered? Therapists, yes they are partially covered by insurance, and insurance make it a hassle for reimbursement aka will only accept paper copy vs. Online receipt. So, with therapist, you need to be diligent with filing claims and chase insurance to process those claims. Having said that, I know how hard is to actually do all this with trying to manage mental health and therapist appointments. This is one of the many reason why we see people dropping out of therapy or treatment mid way which impact health outcomes drastically!
I am with you on broken and expensive Healthcare system. I was in NYC till early this year, and have been through this journey myself. At one point, I remember sitting in A train and just wanting to cancel every appointment I had in my calendar to avoid having to deal with finances. I am grateful to my psychiatrist who would often see through my fake reason and get me back on his couch to discuss treatment changes. Its really hard, but I also know if I can do it, anyone can. Good luck OP!

You’re doing this all wrong. Find someone in network please. This is insane. Yes there are good psychiatrist that don’t take insurance but max you should be paying is $150-$170 and those visits are once a month to once every 3 months.

Are you in NYC? I ask because I've heard it's particularly hard to find in network doctor's in NYC and SF. Like literally won't find one accepting new patients in a 50 mile radius. Might be easier now with virtual. But not ideal to continue the relationship later.
