Does anyone else find those big4accountant “pls fix” posts of people working on vacation to be kind of depressing.. crazy how public accounting doesn’t let their employees have proper vacation time

Gotta set (PSA: and communicate) boundaries. Gotta set that OOO reply in Outlook. Gotta ignore emails.

It’s possible. I promise.

like

It’s not public accounting it’s the individual, IMO. Until you learn to set boundaries and put your feet firmly to the ground, people will ask you for unreasonable requests that still will not be appreciated.

like

Gotta make jokes about it so we don’t actually think about how shitty it is.

To be honest, I’ve been in for 4+ years and have never had an issue taking a vacation. Sometimes people email me but I just ignore it until I return. Nobody has ever gotten upset for me not responding right away while away.

like

Nah I’m already leaving lol

So true about boundaries. Set them and keep them. I left PA because the last firm I was at I had to cancel every vacation I planned for last minute urgent things that were not really urgent.

What are your leave plans?
(Year end is nearing, most of the accounts must have or will move to Code Freeze period and some of the leaves will expire by year end).

3. Utilise all leaves for Vacation.
4. Utilise all leaves for Upskill/Reskill.

Hey ladies, how do you balance the work rush before the end of Q4 and holiday plans with friends and family at the same time? Feeling like everything is slipping through the cracks this year and I'm kind of dropping the ball family wise. What do you do to stay sane during December?

Job offer extended but now some red flags… I was extended an offer today with a pay raise and great benefits. It’s in a field that interests me more but, now some red flags have come up. They voided my offer after asking for time off way in advance in December of this year & the pay that was discussed on the phone is different from my offer letter. I asked the recruiter to clarify and she said I must’ve not heard her correctly on the phone. I’m not having second thoughts… I was excited.

I started at a new firm this year in January. I had a billable goal that was given to me mid year of around 1750 house for the year. I am nowhere near that and definitely will not meet the goal. I had so many non billable hours I was forced to take when I first came in. I worked my ass off in busy season. At my previous firm I never fell short of hours as it was B4. This firm is mid sized and more focused on WLB. My question is how bad do you think this will affect my comp??

Partners or whomever can help me understand about billing and hours. To keep things simple, let’s say you only have one staff to work 1,700 billable hours a year on a $60k salary and you have only one job that and the rate charged to the client is $300/hour and an projected hours budget of 1,700 hours. So ideally you would have revenue of $510k. If the staff takes less time partners make less money and if they take more time partners make more money while the staff keeps the same salary?

Hi tax 🐠,

I have a question for those who prep individual tax returns. My parents claim my grandfather as a dependent on their tax return and due to their low income, receive PTC for the premiums they pay on his insurance (not eligible for medicare). However, would it be advantageous to have him file for his own tax return (he stays with my parents and doesn't have his own proof of residency via bills). If so, can he get PTC if his income is 0?
