33 years in… I used to. Now I make sure I take ME TIME during the work weeks and don’t wait until “vacation.” Some of us think we are the BEST teacher every student will ever have — not true. There is another teacher that will follow you who will be amazing, too! Trust each other and don’t kill yourself trying to be the only one. That’s why students have 13 years of learning!
I don’t really get sick but I am so exhausted that all I want to do is sleep. It usually takes me at least 2 weeks to change modes and get caught up on my sleep. I have no energy.
Igor out of school on June 18. Today is June 29… I realized that I been sleeping from 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm almost everyday!!! Am I getting older? Response: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This school year has been beyond my expectations of how stressful it really was! But I am getting there… slow but steady to my normal person! Summer! Summer! Summer! RA! RA! RA!
I am so grateful for everyone sharing their personal experience on this post. This fall will be my 9th year in education. I have experienced the same anomaly.(30 years in-College Professor) My sister and( 25Athletic Director) brother n law and (14 years in as a Gifted elementary) another sister all experience the same thing as well. Thank you everyone for your personal prespective. I am determine this is my last break being sick. I am writing action plans for better self-care in the fall.Wish me luck!
Good luck!! You will find it and find greater balance also! I also do little meditations throughout the week or day depending on how I feel. It will give you a greater sense of how your body feels before it screams at you! It will be more of a quiet whisper! I love the app Headspace!
I used to but now I take a weekend off or even a personal day one or two weeks before the break and sleep and drink tons of water. I think it is burning the candle at both ends (while holding a lighter on the middle) that makes us susceptible. Remember you probably were infected 3-10 days before you got sick.
I used to as a general Ed teacher, but not now as a related service provider. I believe general Ed teachers are way over worked. I was working until midnight every work day, holidays, and weekends, and my immunity always went way down.
Every single time. I hold on as long as I can and (over) work pushing to get everything taken care of + one more… + one more … + just one more. And as soon as I have a break, everything I’ve been carrying and repressing all releases at once. It’s so frustrating because my off time is so limited as is. I know the greater lesson is self care year round… If only I knew how to get everything done. Twenty-two (official) years in and I just work harder and harder. I’m in that boat now, CA. Minimal sleep, 7 days a week, never a reprieve. There’s something wrong with this picture. And it’s impossible to buy those early years back when I taught in a parochial school or in another state following the ex around. Thankfully, my principal is fabulous and so is my coworker. And always the kids.
Yes I agree with all that are here! I take probiotics, self care and see my chiropractor and make sure I do that at least a few times a week and it has helped me a lot too! It’s your body telling you that you went way too hard! It’s amazing what the mind will control until you are not needing to!
I believe it to be exhaustion/stress and experience all before the break time. The first couple days at the start of summer break, I experience complete fatigue! In no other previous profession have I experienced “tired” in the same way, or to this extreme.
It is because you are finally able to relax!
Yes! I imagine it's my body telling me, "SIT DOWN!"

Yes! I call it teacher syndrome- somehow we keep going until a break comes. Then I get sick.
Yes, I’m convinced I hear my body saying “Not yet! Not yet! Not yet! Ok…NOW!” As each break comes.

Yes cause my back goes into “your not going anywhere”.

Relatable, my entire being responds this way if/when illness follows stress or fatigue.
Summer school was out Thursday and I’ve been on couch since

Not sick. But I need a lot of sleep that first week off.

I’m experiencing that now . My body and mind is exhausted.
I started taking probiotics, which helped! I used to get sick every break and after I started taking them it stopped!

What brand do you take and where do you get them?
Rising Star
Yep! Thought I was the only one.
Yes, me too! It’s like my body knows it’s time to shut down. At least it forces me to rest!
It used to happen to me all the time, but it’s much less frequent for me now. My wife used to joke about it when a break would come around
Basketball coach here. Just finished up our summer work yesterday and am incapacitated today. Happens every break.
Yes! 🥴
Yes, exhaustion takes over, it's like running out of gas. Feel better 😌
