Does anyone else hate it when partners tell you to treat them like a client? I mean I get that in a sense as a way to mandate excellent work product / strive for the best - but it’s also a really shitty way to have to think of / view someone purporting to be a mentor and it causes me so much anxiety! vent over

I tell them to clarify if they want me to treat them like they treat their clients, because that would mean ignore them for weeks and then dump all the work on someone junior to me the last second, then bill them for gazillion hours of review.

funnylike

It’s a stupid way of putting it- even if I get the point they want to make. At any level you should consider yourself responsible for the work product & deliver the best work you can to the level of your abilities. But thinking of the partner as a client? Nope, never.

thank you!! I have heard it so many times (at different firms) and it makes me so anxious!

I tell them to give me something that you think is ready to be filed. It’s the same idea.

When your firm requires billable hours, how are they calculated? Actual vs realized (I.e. what you put on your billing sheet vs what is billed to the client). Does your firm differentiate? Which number do they go by? My mind is somehow not comprehending how some big law hours are under my small firm requirement?

Question for the Biglaw Bowl: How common is it to take a pay cut when being promoted from associate to income partner? I had heard about this happening at some lower ranked V100 firms. But now that I’m more senior and my friends are making partner, it sounds like it’s a lot more common than I thought and happens at firms where I wouldn’t expect it. Does anyone here have any insight into this? How common is it, how much of a pay cut, and how long until your pay catches up to associate pay?

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?
