I just flat out respond to people “thanks for the heads up on this. Could you please send me this in an email with all of the relevant documents and X information so I can add it to my queue l?” I’ve never received pushed back in that.
I do this too. I’ve also set my auto message on our internal chat (Teams) to say something similar. That way anytime someone pulls up Teams to message me, they see my request to email substantive work.
My slack handle message is, "send me docs by email not slack"
I only realised how effective it was after I took it off to post something else for a while.
Yes!
I have a form that I use for most new project intake. I just send it to the requester and say I need this information before I can get started reviewing your request. I haven’t had a problem
Yep, what DGC1 said.
Then send a memo to all your business lines/partners—all requests must be via email (or whatever your formal channel is).
And I’d steer clear of specifying“official” requests because they may like to split hairs and call something official, “unofficial.”
They’re definitely all official! lol

While it's certainly easier to keep track of requests via email or a formal intake process, I think it's important to meet our internal clients where they are most comfortable and effective.
If that means Slack DM or a dedicated legal + [internal client team] channel, email, or (quick) Zoom, we should try to accommodate them, not the other way around.

C1 I'm going to point out again that this appears to be an issue with the client not the process. If you don't have a good relationship with your internal clients, I'd you don have mutual trust, I'd they don't seek you out for guidance, if you have to chase people, if they lie to you, if they don't want your guidance, you will of course run into these issues.
But if you build rapport, trust, strong relationships, and a culture of seeking our guidance from counsel--counsel that is pragmatic and business-oriented--you will have success regardless of how you interact.
You can build an intake tool in Slack so you can still get the info you need and your clients can still use the tool they’re most comfortable with

Meet your clients where they are at. Give them advice over slack and if you want to memorialize it send a confirming email anyway. IMO usually better not to create discovery issues by leaving a written record on sensitive issues anyway.

Yes! “Please email this or your request is likely to be lost in the shuffle. Thanks.”
Some people are jerks and just say “per slack, I’m emailing you” but usually its ok
If there is an ask that is not a quick response, I push them to email me since the at is how I control my docket. But every so often a request comes in through chat that slipped through the cracks and when they ask me about it, I ask “did you email that to me?”. They learn fast
We have a legal intake process that we as a department are very firm on. Therefore when I receive an email or verbal request I always tell the person thank you. Can you follow the legal intake process so that it be assigned and I begin work on this.
