Does anyone else have motivation problems for those odd bits of time between meetings? For example: this morning I had a call at 10, ended at 10:30 and did a quick memo. Have another call at 11 but cannot seem to bring myself to do anything in the interim. This is a recurring issue and it’s really (negatively) impacting my billing. Does anyone have any advice or solutions???

ALWAYS have a list of tasks you can take care of. Then, pick the easiest one at the time you are feeling less motivated and put your head down and complete it - or do as much as you can until your next appointment.

Psychology has proven that motivation does not proceed action - action begets motivation and the more you act, the more motivated you become. Also, by having the list, you can cross (and I do mean run a line through the task) it off your list and it feels so good when you feel like you've accomplished something.

If you’re anything like me, part of why it’s hard to be motivated in those interim periods is because you know you’ll have to stop in the middle and that’s frustrating. If you can identify why you’re procrastinating you can come up with strategies to resolve it.

One thing that helps me is to have a timer that I set and only work during that timeframe. So if I have 30 minutes, I’ll set a 25 minute timer to start something else, make a note to myself about where I left off, and then spend 5 mins prepping for the next activity.

I usually try to take care of smaller administrative tasks when I have short blocks between meetings.

I’ll be joining McKinsey & Company very soon as an Expert AP & I am excited. I got so many personal welcome messages, which was nice. I’m entering the firm with dedicated sponsors & I feel supported. I know that there will be some long days, hard work, & travel, but I am ready! I’m really eager to learn the McKinsey approach to strategy, problem solving, & communication. My ask is - If you are currently at McKinsey (or have recently been at McKinsey), & you have any advice, please share it. TIA!

I am considering accepting a fully remote senior counsel litigation position at a Big Law boutique in a different time zone. Has anyone done this? Comp would increase by a lot, and I like the ability to WFH, but I’m afraid I would become a cog in a wheel instead of doing real legal work. I also don’t know many of their lawyers or any of their judges which concerns me.

Is it reasonable to be expected to spend 20-30 non-billable hours a month checking your paralegal’s work? (i.e. summarizing hundreds of records and bills). The partner said he “didn’t use paralegals” at his previous firm and eating the time is an “investment in yourself.” Is this common?

Anyone who work in municipal finance law practice have any thoughts on the practice and WLB in that field? I’ve started working at this law firm back in March of this year. I wasn’t too familiar with the law field and was in school to become a paralegal. I accepted this position of being an administrative assistant at their firm and started to learn a lot of things that my major would cover. I work with 3 other people including two attorneys and one paralegal. Fast forward a few months now, I’ve started to realize that this firm may not be a good fit for me. But I’m finding it hard to leave, tips?

Getting really frustrated with my job. Im by far the busiest associate my year level, and there are 2 people in my group who literally have no work at all. I feel like I keep missing targets and the partners are disappointed in me, but it’s hard to motivate when I see others not doing anything. I know I should be grateful bc the partners think I’m better than the others (and job security) but I can’t seem to convince myself to care.

Does your firm do anything for yearly work anniversaries? It’s obviously not a big deal but I made it to a year at a firm with high attrition (at least ten associates in our division alone have left in my time here) and have received no acknowledgement of this fact. Nor have I heard anything about a year review. I’d take an atta boy and pat on the back.
