People complain about PM because it's boring, doesn't require critical thought, adds low value, and doesn't offer an exciting career path. Not because it's hard.
In fact, some companies will hire consultants to do it because who would want to put their employees through that?
Don't lowball PM work, people. You tend to notice the clusterfuck only when the PMO doesn't show up.
It is rote but not necessarily boring. Lots of times execs hire consultants to get around tge politics. We as neutral third parties can get stuff done and accelerate time to mkt.
I'm not a PM, but understand that perspective.
OP in this context look for true PMO oppos. Seems what you are doing is an already settled gig. Also, look for tech consulting opps. Even if you're working directly with business, there are always plenty of opportunities to bring in automation and tech. You'll be thanked far more handsomely.
Better question would be, what would you rather be doing than PM work and how can you get there... Nobody wants to do PM work, they are kinda just at the bottom of the totem pole.
I’m currently a PM and love it. I’m not going to lie and say I’m the smartest/ most analytical person in the room. A PM requires a different skill set- herding cats, coordination, problem solving, translating messages and communication. I’m constantly putting out fires and am expected to know every real-time detail and drive solutioning. I’m the point of contact between every internal and external party involved.
It’s not boring at all if you take ownership of the results. It’s hella boring if you’re an expensive project plan and budget person. I was also on a PMO once which is fun if you’re standing it up but awful if you’re running the machine
@C1 - that’s the quality of a good PM that you’ve just described. But most PM only ask what needs to be done and when without having their own thought or even try to understand the challenges. Then, it’s awful from both side
