Does anyone else work under a “mentor” whose perfectionism doesn’t allow you to develop your own practice style and strengths? I came from a smaller firm where I was very much encouraged to come into my own and I feel that that is strongly discouraged at my new firm. Instead of exploring style, I very much am coached that something must be done a certain way and something about my work is always wrong. Anyone else?

I had an identical experience working under a senior after I lateraled from a smaller firm. It was an absolute nightmare, particularly because they were inconsistent in their expectations. Fortunately, they are the only person I have had that problem with. I have found the more experienced partners to afford the latitude that you describe - their focus is on substantive points, not really stylistic. Hopefully you can find other folks to work for that can help you define you practice and thrive, and avoid the folks who do not.

Thank you. I needed to hear that this could get better.

Yep. It’s a problem endemic of big law and it’s honestly one of those things that will ultimately drive me out.

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.

Hi everyone! I’m new here. 217 days sober. I quit on September 11, 2021. I never thought I had an issue until I started lying to my friends and family about my consumption. I would take off work to drink all day and go home drunk, thinking I could play it cool and no one would notice. This has been very hard and very rewarding. If anyone is sober curious or even having a hard time with sobriety, something that really helped me is the reframe app. Be kind to yourselves!
