Does anyone else’s company do “secondments”? I was asked to “look into” this? Someone who is a non attorney executive had a great idea they could save money and have outside counsel “at their disposal” 24/7 and on-site? Is that how this works? I know we spend a lot of $ on outside counsel but I don’t see how one of them having an office on-site adds much value? Maybe it’s a good thing. I am supposed to “report back.” Are they a joint employee? I was asked to advise “what this will look like.”

I work at a firm and secondments are something firms do - they essentially send an associate on their payroll to the client to fill in for a few months (ie covering for someone out on maternity leave, etc.). I have 0 insight into how clients ask for it / it gets decided at the firm, but it does happen (albeit from my current firm, not that frequently).

My company does them but it definitely doesn’t save money it’s just as a backfill while someone is on a long leave

It sounded to me like they are wanting more of a temp - and I think he probably heard someone at a conference or on the golf course talk about this. But called it a secondment. We have a few things brewing and basically have some attorneys billing full time indefinitely on some ongoing matters/projects. I worry about outside counsel being under the constant influence of this case and losing objectivity.

I am currently on a secondment. I am paid by my firm but work remotely for the client 10 hours/week (some secondments are full-time while others are part-time). I am assisting in/house counsel prepare presentations. I think it’s helpful for in-house counsel and a valuable learning experience for me.

Excellent thanks — I think I get it now!

I've done it and asked before. I agree to cover their salary 100% while on secondment for a defined period of time.

Senior associate level.

I only ask for a secondee who already knows my business and who has worked for us. Generally speaking have used it for covering people on leave and it's a great value add because they already know how to plug into my team.

Whose employee is secondment?

The firm’s employee.

Based on your comment, it sounds like maybe something like Axiom could be a better fit that you could explore to add additional resource in a budget-conscious way?

I have seen a few different outside/in-house counsel arrangements during my career. It has the potential to work well in some cases, but I have also seen it be a waste of budget and resources in other cases. It’s also not necessarily cheaper depending on the fee arrangement and scope of work that the person on secondment is doing.

We have immediate family to fly in and local friends, so we can go either route. Writing everything down and it seems like A LOT. What are THE must haves? Photographer, wedding planner? Help 😅

I got a job in-house 6 months after working at a law firm. I really love the work I’m doing (a little bit of everything) but am not getting the mentorship and training I should be getting. Do you think I should try to get a job at a law firm and then try to go back in-house in 2-3 years? Or just try to switch companies to get better mentorship?

I’m interviewing and considering leaving the law and nice in-house job (work 20-30hrs/week, clocking out at 5pm, no evening or weekend work, comp $215k, doing mainly commercial, though not much mobility) for a business-side role within the cap markets team at a fund doing structured finance. Many unknowns, but comp will be at least $400 base, $200 bonus, soon managing a team and serious career progression, more hours/week (TBD how much), plus deal driven. Any thoughts on making this switch?

Three days in, my boss walks and tells me “you’re now also General Counsel.” The company is a hot mess. I can handle the tax work, the securities work, general corporate work, I can even (cont’d in comments)

I heard that when Netflix hires outside counsel, it asks a series of questions to determine how credit is given at the firm selected. The goal is to ensure that the “old white hairs” at the top are not receiving/taking credit from the lawyers really doing and managing the lion’s share of the work. Some level of research shows that the real working lawyers tend to be predominantly women/POC who are essentially punished by old school origination systems. Thoughts?
