Does anyone else’s job tell them they have allocated time during the week for professional development? Let’s say 2 hrs per week for Udemy, pluralsight or some other way of developing your skills.

Yes, they ask that we allocate 2 hours a week to personal development towards a certification or some training. These certs often become a goal youre measured on quarterly or annually.

But what always happens with me and what I've seen happen with others is that because the workload is already quite heavy, no one can afford (while still working a reasonable full-time schedule) to spend any other time away from their normal tasks. Sometimes it's just impossible, other times I have allocated time during the week, but support comes up and puts me well over the hours I should be working. This means that these extra 2 hours you're supposed to take, and results from which you're measured on, ultimately are just two extra hours per week you have to work. Some quarters or years, right before those evaluations I'm scrambling, trying to make up lost training just to meet my job expectations in this category, which is weighted disproportionate to the time we are told to spend on it.

This also ignores the fact that some people are content in their positions and flat out aren't interested in expanding their skills in some artificial way, especially when it just creates undue stress.

It may be a good idea in theory but it doesn't always work. At the end of the day most managers care about the bottom line, and not meeting deadlines sometimes because you spent time doing "personal development" won't fly.

This is exactly how I feel. I think it’d be great to development my skills 2 hrs a week on something but my work load is too big. It seems like no one does it either

That's nice. Do they actually enforce it in any way?

like

I wouldn’t say they enforce it, but your free to mark down 2hrs a week on your own development

Software development is very much a use it or lose it proposition, so I’ve never found the 2hr a week approach to be particularly helpful (30min per day, 4 days a week).

At Volato, we’re 100% remote so we’ve started 3-day in-person developer retreats/hackathons at a big airbnb once a quarter to kick off new projects and do a hackathon on some new tech/techniques that we may ultimately include in a project. Last hackathon, for instance, was creating custom bots in ChatGPT that call our pricing APIs.

Question about what’s realistic: My boss, vp of marketing, is dead set on working with an agency who can produce multiple videos over the course of several small shoots so that we can iterate on what’s working. From my experience, this would cost a lot more than our budget (80k) and would ultimately be more expensive than one larger shoot with more deliverables. Videos are short, 10s or less and without a real narrative — more just for a sizzle reel kind of thing. Thoughts? Nyc based.

Remote vs in person for software developers in their early career. I started my career in 2021 fully remote. After the office opened again in 2022, I was able to learn a lot about the system from other people in the office and solve bugs faster. Without a doubt made my job easier. Lots of my colleagues still work from home in 2022. I can’t see why they are making it harder for themselves on purpose. I’m fairly confident they can afford to get to the office because they have teslas and shit.
