Does anyone ever feel not respected or in some cases straight up disrespected on airlines or hotels in spite of status due to age, gender, race, or otherwise?

There are thousands of airline and hotel employees, many of whom are tired, having bad days and underpaid. Even the best get tired of everyone with status thinking they are special. On most flights in hub cities, 75% of the passengers are elite. When everyone is elite, nobody really is.

I'm sure there is some use of stereotypes or profiling that goes on. I love to slum it on travel days when I'm on vacation and have gotten a second look when trying to board with Group 1. Hell I'm probably judging people in a similar fashion when they're not looking the part. I'd guess it is likely due to the numerous times I've seen someone more likely to be group 7 than group 1 when slumming it in their juicy sweat pants, 3 carryon bags, and travel pillow for a 2 hour flight. I'd venture to guess the easiest way to avoid it is to dress and act like you belong.

If you’re talking about employees rather than fellow travelers, then generally customer service is pretty standard for greetings on airlines and hotels. I tend to get more judgment from travelers personally since I don’t fit the standard look of a first class passenger. Once employees find out I’m higher status they act even more accommodating I feel as a young WOC. Speculating, but they tend to strike up more conversations and get more friendly with me than my seat mates. Also I have absolutely no expectations for US based airlines or hotels to give special treatment, but internationally they tend to do more for you.

United and American airlines - disrespected every goddamn time. I've stopped flying them now. Have no issues with Delta. Can't comment on hotels. Any time I've had any issue, I've either gotten an upgrade or another room. *knock on wood*

I've never been disrespected by UA or Marriott employees, but as a UA GS I get some nasty looks from 1k pax when I'm dressed in jeans and a t-shirt walking in front of them when I get to board and they can't. It's even more fun when I have my 10 year old do it holding a stuffed dog and GS status!

I had this happen for the first time last week. In line go buy coffee at the Hilton I'm staying at and every single day that week the older woman selling it asked the older men before me in line if they were diamond or gold status (it's free) and didn't ask me.

You should see the Women In Consulting bowl, instances every week...

Hi all! For an experienced hire as a Human Capital Consultant at Deloitte, what should I expect the salary/sign-on bonus to be at a MCOL city? I have approx. 3.5 YOE (non-consulting), MBA and MS degree (non target school) and also SHRM certified (which is probably irrelevant for the role but thought I’d share anyways). Already did my research but the range is kind of all over the place for experienced hires so just want to have a ballpark. Thanks!

Hello Everyone! Had a discussion yesterday regarding “claw backs” being included in a policy for sponsorship if the new employee leaves before 3 years. It was a declining percentage over a three year period. My POV was that it wasn’t something I’ve ever done and didn’t seem like they were sure of the hire they were making. I get wanting to save costs but at the same time doesn’t feel inclusive or welcoming. Thoughts? Have you done this or seen it work? Thanks!
