Oh boy. So, do what you want but here are some guidelines if I may:
1. Don’t make it about you. “I like your hair better this way” is a solid DONT
2. Don’t do it to try to make it seem like you’re down for the cause; a compliment is one thing but we’re often told our hair is unprofessional. So if you’re going to be down for the cause, don’t just talk about it, be about it; be an advocate
3. If you compliment it straight, compliment it curly
4. Don’t ask questions, Google it like some of us had to
You should be really conscious of why you're giving the compliment. I don't like men to compliment my appearance in general unless I have the sort of relationship with them where I might care what they think.
I LOVE when black women compliment my hair because they know exactly what it took and what looks good and generally have good taste
The only time they don't ask is when it is straight, doesn't change and looks like theirs
Yes,
A white, female MD asked me why would I want more hair on my head to go to the beach? (I had installed a beach wavy sew-in for a trip)
The white, male CFO of my integrated audit looked at me (with natural curly bush) & said, “every time i see you, you’ve done something different with your hair!” (Pause) “it looks good.” I was caught off guard so my black partner intercepted the convo saying “and every time you see me I’m more grey”... he saved the awkward moment for me.
Lol yes. Mostly the middle aged men
Ok gotta ask you... is it okay for a white man to compliment a black woman on her hair?
SM1 Most people who over step or offend don't feel bad
To answer the original post - yes. It’s normally a compliment or a stare.
Yep
Do you compliment anyone else? Particularly any other women? Compliments seem to blend into "this is different and I want to comment on it but don't know how"
@SM1 it's ok to tell her that her hair is pretty
SM1 whether or not to compliment depends on the individual. Some will have lots of do’s and don’t and others will take a compliment as just that.
Okay, there was one girl I would see that she changed up her hair style maybe once a month and each one looked like it took a lot of time and effort and it looked beautiful. I told her “nice hair, it looks beautiful." I don’t feel bad about it.
I personally like compliments, hair, clothes, shoes, keep em’ coming.
So I should feel bad?
SM1 of course you shouldn't. My point is that most people mean well. The fact that you think about it means you mean no harm.
More white males compliments my hair than anyone else
I'm the woman who keeps changing my hair and i embrace it... i embrace the questions... i embrace the comments and let people know I love expressing myself through my hair and its one of the benefits of being a black women. As a personal preference I don't do any colour... black hair always and I'm yet to rock a Pocahontas look so far I've stuck to braids cornrows silk pressed twist crochet curly afropuff looks 🙅🏾♀️🙅🏾♀️🙅🏾♀️
