Tbf, I think it’s the travel companies here that are doing most of the price gouging, no? 15-20K per person is definitely not affordable!

Hajj has been a business since the very beginning. We have a tendency to romanticize history.
Are they being excessive? Sure. But this is nothing new. If you think about it, this is the reason Hajj is obligatory only when one can afford it. There will always be people who get priced out. For most of us from middle class immigrant families, if not our parents, our grandparents’ generation used to save for a lifetime to go to Hajj.

Agreed. I just get frustrated when I hear simplistic arguments like supply and demand, lack of acknowledgment of indirectly funding the Saudi government through Hajj, and people who are arrogant about having already gone who say, “Hajj is for the young” to aging people who really would love to go.
The trick is to go to hajj via your “home country”. A 5 star hotel stay luxury type hajj cost me 7k from Pakistan in 2018
You have to hold the citizenship of that country and also win their lottery system. It’s much easier to go from a western country and you will get treated better
Hajj has always been expensive. 20k is probably if you want to do VIP hajj. There are still packages sub 10k. Check out Sara Travels
