Does anyone feel like this becomes a thankless job when you hit manager? I don’t get compliments or thanks anymore…

Occasionally get thanks from Partners but only when I do something that makes a significant impact optically.. you have to come to accept that it’s part of the level you’re at

I always thank managers when they give me advice or some sort of comp award. Giving me work….not so much

Completely get what you're saying. The reason is that we are at a stage in career where good work is implied through bonuses and bar-counter conversations. Appreciation is often used as a retention and engagement tool which is certainly not thought of as something a manager needs to be reassured about their work. While I don't completely agree with this sentiment/approach, I do get the fact that formal means of appreciation are solely designed to fulfill this purpose in most firms. However it's human nature that a simple verbal "Appreciate your work on xxxx" doesn't feel the same as a thank you note from a team member over email.

I guess the key is to read between the lines and sense appreciation which is there but not expressed in those many words.

For eg.
- My SM started copying me in all imp emails on the case.
- My offshore team won't take 'orders' from any other team but will immediately prioritise the task if I say so.
- My subs started seeking me for personal advice and can't thank me enough for being their mentor on and off job.
- key discussions are often deferred purposefully when I'm OOO or sick.

All this tells me that I'm valued and key to business. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the great response.

I definitely see myself now taking on major roles in advising the client in-person alongside the partner (and partners look to me for this), iterate quickly on juniors’ slides to play a big role in their skills development etc.

Think I’m finding the transition a bit strange, but i guess it makes sense that as a manager you’re ‘meant’ to be able to oversee great analytical work, rather than it being outperformance.

I thank my managers when they're good managers.

Yeah, makes sense - can definitely try to get feedback from juniors more and take satisfaction in that

Hi Fishes.
I’m an L4 IC. I just got promoted to L4 in an off cycle promotion. It’s been only a month and since it’s a CS based role we work in Night Shifts. I feel monotonous within a month as it is a Virtual role.
I started to look for roles in JobFinder. The HMs are okay to consider, but the thing is “How do I say it my Current Manager??”
Can anyone give a subtle idea, such that my Current manager agrees even though its a month only?

Signs I’m getting old: I tripped and fell, and somehow partially tore my ACL. Have to figure out if I want surgery, and how to tell the team—at the very least, I’ll need a ton of PT. I’m a first year associate and the only woman on all of my teams, so I’m freaking out about how this is going to reflect on me. I know I’m overthinking this, health comes first, etc…but I’m still so scared to tell people.

I'm looking at applying to MBB (Preferably BCG) for a summer internship this summer. I'm a first-gen Oxbridge student, and while I have little experience in consulting along the lines of MBB, I did work in the city last summer as an sustainability consultant.

I'm curious how important it is to have a referral etc and what you'd recommend for applications opening in jan. Any advice is super appreciated I don't have any connections to the industry but it's something im interested in.

Would you ever accept a ground-floor bedroom facing the street (but set back from the pavement) in London? Residential, upscale zone 2 neighbourhood (think Victoria Park Village, East Dulwich, Fulham), but like everywhere in London, there are some rougher bits nearby. I sleep with the window open for fresh air, so I’m concerned about burglary and assault (I’m a woman). There’s the option of using an internal bedroom instead, but it’s not nearly as nice as the street-facing one.
