Does anyone find their biglaw firm is totally lacking in any sense of humor? I feel like I work with a bunch of automatons.

The alternative is inappropriate entitled assholes that make racist and sexist comments they think everyone else should laugh at. Maybe in 30 years diversity initiatives will take hold but, for now, I am glad to work with robots.

I’m disagreeing. Humor in the workplace isn’t a binary, either nonexistent or inappropriate.

Note that I mean disagreeing with A1’s statement that “the alternative is…” because there are plenty of alternatives. But it’s true enough that lots of lawyers are terrible people.

In my experience biglaw has about the average fun people to automatons ratio. My strategy has been to utilize dry inoffensive humor so that I don’t die inside, whoever has a sense of humor can appreciate mine, and whoever doesn’t probably won’t know that I was joking.

My experience at two v30 firms has been the opposite, but I’m in lit where there are a lot of big personalities. It’s good and bad. But I do love it when I run into someone totally robotic. I have fun mirroring my personality to theirs and then switching back with more normal peeps.

Everyone has four humors at my firm.

I like to be aggressively myself and make the jokes I think are funny (within confines of workplace propriety). People then self select whether they want to interact with me on a social level and I end up surrounded by like minded people. I’ll still do good work for anyone who needs it, just no need to spend time/energy trying to have a chat with them outside getting instructions and feedback.

Yes, and I feel most lawyers are this way. I'm constantly wondering how I got here. I stick out like a sore thumb. The lawyers I actually like do too. When I first sarted at my firm, I was my natural, cracking jokes and sarcastic self and got crickets, repeatedly. Now, in the office I'm the robot described and keep my social life outside of work.

Same!

I say all the funny stuff in my head and internally judge everyone else for being tightwads.

Not everyone at my firm is like this, but I think I managed to get in the fun practice group. Everyone is super chill and cracking jokes when we hang out. I genuinely like hanging out with these people.

The comments on this app are proof positive attorneys don’t get nuance and hyperbole.

I like having fun and getting along with people, but generally I conserve my social energy during the week so I have something left for my friends and family. That might mean I’m a little “robotic” (but friendly obvs) but that’s okay with me. Work is just the place where I get my paycheck.

Weird — I’ve had the opposite experience. I onboarded at my firm about 2 months ago and haven’t met anyone in person, but everyone I’ve met is really nice and we even send memes and chitchat on IM. Makes the grinding super manageable.

First review is coming up. Tips for survival? I fully expect it to be terrible. I am not happy here, I never have been, I don't want that to come across in the review, and I just want to make it out of the meeting with a small amount of grace. My plan is to just nod along and say thanks, will work on. I am also insanely busy right now and this is the last thing I want to deal with.

Latam corporate associate here. Fully fluent in Spanish, with most work, negotiations, calls and correspondence being in Spanish. Pro tip - unless you can negotiate an agreement in another language, please don’t put it on your LinkedIn/firm profile. The clients don’t care if you can ask “where’s the bathroom” in German, and it diminishes the skills for those of us who really are fluent.

I realized recently that I can turn my “super associate” persona at any time. I had it off during covid when my kids needed me and got a bad review. So now it’s back on. I’m responding to midnight emails (and daytime ones in under 20 minutes) and getting work done the same morning. I’m spending countless hours doing edits over edits. I actually don’t like super associate. Why do people live like this 24/7?!? 🤔
