Does anyone genuinely work on a pleasant team or with normal management? Really exhausted by this culture of rudeness and incompetence. For those that have left...how long did it take to find something?

Really sorry to hear this, because I know it's not what KPMG (or any firm) wants to project about itself.

In the last 6 months I went from a really toxic, micromanaging team leadership to one where tbh I was floundering initially because I was suddenly given trust and space. There are teams like this, but things start from the top. Can you move topics or teams within KPMG so you don't lose your network? Is it a a specific manager and you can talk to the ppmd about switching within their team?

Yes, and I was pleasantly surprised just how... NORMAL my managers are. They took my concern seriously, voice their support for me, and include me in decisions that change my situation in some way (letting me choose a location to move to). When I thanked them and said I truly appreciated it, they seemed surprised—and said this is just how they treat people. I said, well, my old team never did anything remotely like it.

My old team, on the other hand, was bigger, bureaucratic, and full of middle managers who don’t have any leadership skills and frankly have no business managing people. One VP level guy (above me) somehow kept reading my direct emails as “hostile” and “calling him out” when I in fact responded and corrected his false statement with evidence. He was just mad that I did that in an email thread with other more senior people that HE HIMSELF cc’ed on 🤣😭 when he shot down my request for a deadline extension on a new process that had never been done, ever, in our team, because I wasn’t sure how long it’d take.

More senior managers told me I needed to learn to say no when I had too much on my plate. When I said no, the above happened. Multiple times over. One time, they made me take over work for another employee that left. Given that my hands were already full leading another important project, I asked for help with 50% of it. Denied denied denied. As a result, I delayed my planned vacation (told everyone about it, then later said never mind I’ll be working those days).

Then that VP above had the gall to tell me—“if you don’t set your own boundaries (w/ respect to planned and approved time off), no one will respect you.” Well, the reason why I moved my own plans was precisely because they refused to respect it when I said no to more work than I could handle in the first place. I find this extremely hypocritical.

When they knew I was going to leave, they found all excuses to complain about my communications skills, despite 1) acknowledging I have solid technical skills and am extremely hardworking 😂 and 2) I got 5+ other people giving me GLOWING reviews. All this impacted my bonus.

I wrote emails thanking my old manager and other senior managers I worked closely with, along with details to hand over my projects. No responses. My manager took the day off on my last day without telling me, so no official goodbye we appreciate you, while he insisted that I failed at communicating because I had not asked him 7 days in advance for time off (arbitrary number and rule was definitely not in place by firm or team).

I cut them off completely. My parents always say, I should keep a good relationship in case I’d ever need my old managers for something in the future (letter of ref/verification or networking opportunities). In this case, I see no need. I do not need to maintain relationships with people who took advantage of an ambitious junior person.

I’ve met others at the firm who are so much more kind, including the teams who went with another candidate but wanted to keep in touch to recruit me later, the team I interned at, and of course my current team—so I know my firm has both kinds of people. But for the bad managers, may the bridges I burned light the way.

To answer your question, it took me 9 months to get 3 new offers since I started out (at first I only looked around because I hated the job). But I only really accelerated later after these hypocritical incidents and realizing I also hated the team. So from the acceleration point to the 3 offers, it was 4 months. But it was worth the growth in my career, salary bump and most importantly, the mental well being. It is just tiring if you’re riled up every day either because your team says something stupid or hypocritical.

Project management was never something I was interested in. I went to school for marketing and spent 4 years in a operations management role. I’ve spent 6 months in my current role and have recently considered a career in project management.

My question is - is there good money in it? Work culture and satisfaction are important yes but I have a family and goals and money is definitely a motivator. Is project management a good route?

Doing a tax harvest on a custodial account and opening a brokerage account with Schwab. Will have about 27k. My plan is to max out my Roth IRA for TY20, which will leave me about 22k. Looking for some good recommendations of how to distribute the remaining funds into my brokerage. Would it make sense to park another 6k into a HYSA until March 2022 and use that to max out my Roth IRA for TY21 and then use the remaining ~12k in the brokerage?
