Does anyone have a good system for managing tasks/projects? Specifically how do you keep track of multiple projects with varying deadlines. I know lots of people use excel but that seems inefficient.

I use excel but I think the emphasis shouldn’t be on the tool itself, rather you should focus on the routine of updating the tool you use. There isn’t a tool that’s going to know what you have unless someone updates it.

For instance, when I get assigned a task/project, I will update the spreadsheet with what needs to be done. You’ll have to customize the spreadsheet to work for you. I have client, project type, status (not started, working, need info, completed), client deadline, personal deadline, expected hours it’ll take, and a notes column, to name a few.

At the end of each day, I’ll cross off what I’ve finished by updating the status column or removing it when it’s completely done.

It doesn’t matter what tool you use, what matters is if you have a routine to actually update the tool being used. Just my 2 cents.

Outlook tasks has a new Widows widget and web view, both of which make it a lot more user friendly. I also add an appointment on my calendar every day at 6am to put reminder notes for what I need to do that day (review x, check in with so in so about y, return voicemail, etc.). It’s the first thing I look at every day and helps keep me on track.

If you have a dependable person under you delegate the tracking down to them and just check in with them on progress

Sm1. Unless you’re referring to the %1 loser. Start by training your team. With the thought you had your mental aren’t going anyway to the good side, I doubt your ability to lead the team into a good vibe. Sometimes SM don’t need to have good leadership skills and you might be good at something else. A good leader don’t expect something he/she can accomplished easily will magically happen to the folks around or below them

Outlook Tasks is pretty good. You can categorize your items, set reminders, assign tasks to others and more. I’ve used it for a long time and really like it. Good luck!

I have the simplest way. Make a calendar invite for the project goal in outlook. Such as, delivering project to manager review this Sunday. Then another invite to deliver to client the next week. This is simple to do and integrated with your email.

Advance:type the notes and details within that calendar invite to yourself.

No separate software needed at all. Kind note to make those calendar invite not shown as busy or out of office

This is a really good idea. I’m gonna try doing this

Since WFH started, I have started to use my Amazon Alexa device, (which you can also do everything on your mobile phone Alexa app). You can use it for multiple lists, and I find the reminders features very flexible and helpful. Easy to customize reminders and send email reminders and lists to team members

I have recruiters from mid-level firms reaching out to me pretty regularly for tax manager roles, but I honestly don’t feel like I am ready to be a manager. I don’t want to be in a situation where I am unable to deliver. So my question is what does it take to be a tax manager at a mid-level firm? What experience and temperament do you need? Is it normal to not feel ready? I’ve worked 2.5 yr at a regional firm, made it to senior, now been in industry for almost 2.5 yr as a tax analyst.
