Does anyone have a recommendation for a tablet or similar device that can be used in situations where it is too cumbersome to have the full laptop? I don’t have a big law budget. This is my first year as a solo, so something that can get the job done at the most economical price is the goal.

Microsoft Surface. Can be used in tablet or laptop mode. Laptop mode gives me my desktop look and settings. I have had one for 6 years, it still works great, and I have not had any need for a laptop since.

like

Second this. I used the surface for awhile. Microsoft has really changed for those of us who grew up with glitchy windows programs in the 90s and early 2000s. I was pleasantly surprised. I did end up switching to a laptop eventually, but I picked the Microsoft surface laptop, which has the same touch screen functionality. Been very happy with it.

My wife has the latest iPad (not Pro, Air, or mini, just iPad). It would probably be good enough for your use case. It starts at $329 new on Apple’s website. You’ll want a keyboard too.

If you have a larger budget, I can also recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7, which I think I got for $700. It’s a powerhouse. I have it paired with a Logitech keyboard, and I use it fairly often.

Buy a used iPad on r/hardwareswap and get the keyboard that attaches to it. I use one all the time and love it. It’s great for notes on Google docs etc

like

You can find used iPad Pro on eBay all day for less than $200. I bought one three years ago that still works great.

I think the iPads are great!

Advice for Of Counsel roles? I am of counsel at a firm where I can set my own rate and keep a percentage of collections, which varies slightly depending on whether the client is one I generated or not. I’m finding that a lot of my work is for firm clients where the lawyer negotiated a flat fee (and the hours worked are less, due to efficiency etc). What is the right way for me to be compensated in this scenario?

Has anyone recently transitioned from Microsoft one drive to a case management system, such as Clio? How was the transition? I feel as though I’m rarely using the system except to open a matter and upload docs for e-signing. It feels easier to use one drive since it’s accessed locally on my Cpu. Any tips on how to make the transition smoother is greatly appreciated!

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.
