Blame it on the connection and ask them to speak louder and slower. Or just be honest with them, I think people appreciate it when you tell them as it is because then they know you're genuine about understanding them.
Usually for me, after working with them for a bit, I get used to their accent and can understand them much better. Unfortunately for me, understanding one accent from one person doesn’t mean I can understand the same accent from someone else. IMO the best thing to do is just to ask him to repeat but more slowly, and eventually you’ll be able to understand easily.

on a multinational project and am really struggling to understand one of my (senior) colleagues. I feel embarrassed constantly asking him to repeat himself so would greatly appreciate any advice / exercises / helpful YouTube videos / etc.
What is this person’s first language?
Hey it’s not just you. I struggle with that too haha. You’ll get used to it, try and focus. (And try to use email a lot!)
I am hard of hearing. I do a lot saying ‘let me repeat back what i thought i heard’.
