Applying is all it takes. Idk why it would help your resume if you’re not intending to practice there, unless some firms in MA want to see you barred in NY.
Just indicate on your resume that you can transfer your score. My MA firm just had me get admitted in NJ Bc we are expanding into that state but I never would have thought to get admitted in NJ until I began working here. Plus then the firm will pay for your fees
My firm is NJ/NY/PA/FL. Took the bar in NJ. They had me transfer my UBE score to NY, even though I’m really only practicing in NJ. Make sure your MPRE scores haven’t expired or you’ll have to retake it (pain in the ass). After that, the NY character and fitness is annoying as all hell. I’ve been waiting since December to be cleared for swearing in and in NJ I had no problem.
Thank you! My MPRE score expiring was one of the reasons why I wanted to possibly start the process. For now I will just state on my resume that I can transfer and I’ll wait until a future employer makes that request.
Honestly it’s a HUGE hassle - the applications are all different from state to state and take forever to complete, you need to chase down references and former employers to get new letters/forms from each of them, and then each state has its own additional requirements (ex NY has the NYLE which isn’t hard but is annoying, plus continuous CLE requirements). Plus costs between $300-$1200 per state, which your firm might cover but not if it’s to be more marketable to other employers.
