Does anyone have anecdata as to whether there is a waiting period (and if so, how long) before maternity leave benefits kick in for laterals in biglaw? I know in other industries, a year is common, but not sure if that is the case among large law firms.

I’m at an AmLaw 100 and had a year waiting period. Not just for laterals though. It was pretty clearly disclosed during the offer process if I recall.

For federal job protection you general need to be there a year but private policies can be totally different and as such, can be negotiated as part of a job offer. Not exactly what you’re seeking, but something to keep in mind!

The FMLA requires employers to give up to 12 weeks leave and hold your job only after you’ve been employed 12 months. Employers are not obligated to hold your job for you until you hit that 12 month mark. I took a job while I was pregnant and I got an agreement from the employer before hand that they would give me eight weeks fully paid leave and hold my job for me (even though they were under no obligation to do so).

FMLA job protection requires a yr. But it's unlikely that they will replace you while you are on leave.

The income you earn while on maternity leave usually comes from insurance policies your firm offers (short term disability is the common policy that covers a maternity leave). That policy may have a waiting period. You would want to check with your STD provider.

A year sounds right or maybe prorated benefits for your term of employment. Should be in your employee handbook

Hi girls,

I joined the current company when I was about 2 months pregnant and they were extremely welcoming.. My baby is now 2+ years and we are planning to have another baby soon. What are your views on opting for the maternity leaves 2nd time within 3.5 years of joining the company? Would it reflect badly on me? Btw, I'm a high perfomer at my company and have also had a promotion recently. I am feeling too guilty but baby no.2 is also a priority given the age factor and the fertility concerns

Rant: I finally got a baby registry started and sent the link to family... and immediately was told all the things I need on there that I don't have (including things I'm opting to just NOT GET, like an electric pump - why is my nursing preference up for debate????). I will be joining Infosys this Thursday as a 7+ YOE Tech Lead. I am an avid trekker and every year I go on a trek at least once which requires me to take a 5-7 working days off. Its actually my passion.

Just wanted to know how difficult it is to get leaves approved and officially before how many days do i need to inform my manager?

Is there any SOP for applying leaves at Infy?

Thank you in advance!

This may be an unpopular opinion.

But I think it's kinda shitty that when FAANG people get laid off, everyone feels bad for them and they get so many resources to get rehired, but the same is not true for people that get laid off at smaller lesser known organizations.

Like those FAANG people will be fine, they got generous severance packages. The people who actually need help often get overlooked or are forgotten.

I was fired last month after a short time at the company. I knew things weren't going well- it was a terrible culture fit & I was also planning my exit strategy. They wouldn't give me specific reasons other than to vaguely say it was performance related. I agree I made a few dumb mistakes (none of any dire consequence) but what kills me is that I tried really hard. I don't want to change careers but I have a deep seeded fear that no matter how hard I try, I will never be a "good attorney".
