Relatable. That can be challenging, we often find our worth in our work and being of service to others.
I’ve had to learn (which I also coach my team on) that no one will set your boundaries for you. You have to practice saying no, or yes but…, and teaching people how to work with you. I promise there’s no benefit in martyring yourself for work.
Look at your time as a finite resource - you only have X hours in a week. What can you do with that time?
Find lines that help you say no without saying no:
“Here’s what I CAN do for you”
Be ruthless about your goals. If it doesn’t advance you or what you want to achieve, then it’s a no.
I also feel pressured to take on work that anyone offers or asks for, but I generally tell them that it’ll take two or three days of lead time BEYOND what I think it might take, because so much stuff tends to crop up in the meantime.
Former boss gave me some great advice: “You set the pace - nothing is the end of the world, even if your AD says so.”
Also… try to make sure that someone else knows that you’re going above and beyond. Not worth going crazy if you’re not getting credit in some way.
If you have multiple people giving you extra tasks try laying out some of them for those people and asking where they see their new task slotting in. Sometimes it helps to throw it back to them. “ASAP” can sometimes turn into “a couple days”. Then if you’re still over resourced you should speak to your manager about ways to work on time management. Then they will be able to tell you if they see places for your improvement, or maybe improvement on their resourcing. Also ask yourself what you get out of the tasks. Some of them have less reward so saying no is okay. Have been there.👍
