Does anyone have any advice on how to write standards based IEP goals when the student is significantly behind grade level skills?

What I do is write the goal based on grade level standards but use they’re current levels as material. For example if I have a third grader working at a first grade level, you can write a goal about comparing and contrasting texts, but use first grade text to complete the goal and as they’re current level moves up, you keep moving up and working on the same goal with harder texts in the classroom.

You write an IEP based on the student disabilities. Therefore, I would use the standard for which grade they need to reach their goal. For example if they are a 3rd grade student but working towards mastering 1st grade goals, then is would give them first grade standards. I hope that helps!?!

We have to write a goal based upon grade level standards no matter what the ability level is of our students. I include the support they will get and focus on skills they would need to meet that standard. Even if goal is for fractions and the student would be identifying numbers in a fraction addition problem with the use of a number chart to point at the corresponding number. It's an illogical way to go about it but we get creative and unpack the heck out of the standards .

In our state we have to word our goals very similarly to the ETR needs. So my goals are worded to reflect the needs as much as possible. I then list the grade level appropriate standard and write "X need is a prerequisite skill for this standard". I don't have many functional goals, but when I do, I cite the extended standard for that need / goal.

In Texas we have prerequisite skill documents for each of our TEKS (standards). We start at the grade level the student is at and then follow the prerequisite skills back to the level they are at and use that to write their IEPs.

I saw someone else mention it but always write at least one grade level goal and then your short-term objectives can be those baby steps that the student can actually obtain and be challenged with.

Have been getting hit up by places about great jobs I’m excited about, but they happen to be at places with known diversity problems. I can’t shake that feeling that they’re talking to me because I’m a POC and they need to diversify, not necessarily because of my experience and skill set. Anyone have advice of how to fight that feeling? Other advice?

Organization is critical for classroom management. Try assembling units into Google Slides with links to ppts, activities, etc. Color code them according to the rainbow: Unit 1 red, Unit 2 orange etc. It takes a minute at first but the payoff is a one click upload for next year! PS I use the same color code system with felt tip pens to grade my classes: 1st hr red, 2nd hr orange etc.
