Does anyone have any funny or heartwarming stories about teaching this year? I could really use some right now.

I am seeing students one-on-one through Google Meet for math or reading support sessions. (I am an elementary Title 1 teacher.) We just started this week due to the ransomware attack last week. I started seeing an extremely low 1st grader for both reading and math on Tuesday. She was so shy she would hardly speak on Tuesday. I wasn't sure how we would get anywhere! Things got better every day, though, and then today she jumped on my Google Meet even though she's not scheduled to see me on Fridays. The student I was scheduled to see didn't come, so I just worked with her instead. She was so sweet, animated, and showed so much promise in her reading progress!! It was so heartwarming that this student who wouldn't even talk to me Tuesday was so excited to meet with me that she came an extra day!! 😊

Thanks for sharing it was meant for the other student not to show up so you could build a bond with this student. Awesome !!

I did an entire 30 minute work session with one of my students today, where he had his feet behind his head and was rubbing his toes on his face! 🤣🤣 he was answering all my questions and doing his work so I let him keep his feet up there!

We are distance learning and I have had to have families come pick up physical materials (I teach mod/sever k-3 students living with autism) and two of my families that stopped by this week had their kids want to stay for class. My older student with some verbal told mom “my school” and then gave my arm a hug (they were wearing masks and I have sanitizer, was not excepting hug). This student started with me in January last school year so was only on site for about 2.5 months and the rest has been distance learning. This made my day as I had been struggling with tech issues and such.

I had a junior during a Pre-cal review session ask a bunch of questions. After class she lingered and made a statement.
"Thank you for being patient and answering all of my questions. I think I'll do great on the exam."
She didn't hang around for a response, so I emailed her and told her one simple thing.

Thank you, for your questions, I'm sure you saved many of your classmates grades too!

Highlight of an aweful start to the year.

We had a scavenger hunt today. They had to find something that makes them happy, one sweetie grabbed her dad. I just love that we get a glimmer into their lives.

That is the sweetest!!!

Hi! I have a few. I teach 9th and 12th grade and I have a 5 year old who just started Kindergarten.

One of my seniors was on a Zoom getting help with filling out an online application for college, and he clicked a box somewhere/somehow that marked him as an immigrant (he isn't), and he came to asking how long his mother had been in this country. I heard him yell over Zoom, "Ma! How old are you?" She replied, and he commented on her age, and she yelled at him for being rude. 🤣

On my son's first online simulation day (we are remote for him although I cannot be for work), his class shared their favorite colors.

When it was my son's turn, he told his teacher he loves the color green. She observed he was wearing a green shirt that day, and he responded, "Yep! And my underwear is green, too!"

A kindergartner asked me what happened to my hair. When I told her I braided it the night before so it would be curly she replied, “Well my mom brushes HER hair.” I thought my hair was just fine but I guess not. 😂🤣

Kids say the darness things!!

It was my first time teaching in Zoom with 4th graders. I was having some technical difficulties and was just all around nervous. They kept asking “what’s are we doing?” in the chat. Then one of the kids responded with “let’s just give him a little bit of time guys.” Definitely helped me feel better.

I was coming out of Meijers with a couple of box fans (a classroom-warming gift for the new teacher in our grade-level team) & a guy said "Hi Ms W!" It was a kid who'd graduated a couple of years ago, who recognized me even with a mask.

(We've only had 4 days of teaching. Hopefully I have good stories from that soon!)

I love my kids. They always hello me instill arrival literacy within myself. I have just met an awesome group of fourth graders, and for all of them, it was love at first sight. When I found my soul purpose, everything just started clicking. I was starving all summer, because you know data management and whatever... beginning back for a few weeks has helped me to rebalance :) I'm so glad to know who I am!!

I teach K/1 and am doing virtual stickers to encourage the students to attend online. After they get a full rainbow of stickers they get to be the class DJ and pick the songs we sing for a day. The first couple students got to do it and they had SO much fun. It was adorable! I made a little graphic with their picture and cool lights. They thought it was the best thing ever.

I'm going crazy obviously. I found out that there is a blind/deaf Australian shepherd available. And because she's at the rescue where I got the puppy who died of parvo, I'm pre-approved and also wouldn't have to pay a fee. I'm such a sucker for a sob story. It's how I ended up with this feral beast. (And BTW she's doing great with her training.) I was hoping my husband would talk me out of it. Tell me I'm too inexperienced to train that type of dog. He is going to look at the puppy on Sunday.

Looking for some advice for an upcoming interview with a (well-known) bank. Not a credit union.

My interview is to discuss what’s available and what path I may be best in or interested.

Ideally, I want to learn more about money (did not go to school for banking or financing, but had honors math in college).

I’m currently into learning more on the stock market, taxes, and how small businesses start up. Would like to be able to make maybe 60k/year (later down the road).

Any tips appreciated.

5 YOE with the majority of the time spent in audit. I started at a regional firm (left as an experienced senior). Had a short stint in industry last year which resulted in me going back to PA as a contractor at a large national firm. I have a FT offer from the firm I’m contracting w/ but I think my public audit days are over. I’ve thought about continuing to do contract work, going back to industry, or potentially going to a boutique consulting firm. I’m leaning towards contracting :/

A colleague of mine is struggling with a student who screams, cries, and throws fits when it is time to complete tasks. They have created behavior charts with something fun to work towards: it doesn’t work. They have called the parent and they just cry and say that they experience the same issue and they don’t know how to fix it. They have reached out to guidance and all they can say is “sorry, the child isn’t hurting themselves or others. It’s frustrating and I can’t help you.”
