M1 in specialty tax group as of 10/1 and just got a second (& final) offer for a fully remote industry tax job where the base salary is $19k lower than my KPMG salary after taking into consideration the mid-year raise but still 6 figures. I was contacted out of the blue by a headhunter last week promising to do their best to place me in an AMLAW200 firm as a lateral. (4 years practicing, all litigation; looking to move to transactional).
I’ve never dealt with a headhunter before, and I’m taking everything they say with a grain of salt, so insight as to their effectiveness, reliability, and overall successful placements in or equivalent to the type of firms they have connections with is greatly appreciated.

What is a reasonable amount to accept to settle a case with undisputed liability? Let’s say for example potential damages are realistically $100k-1M. Let’s say cost of defense is $200k. No chance of them getting out on SJ or a MTD. Is cost of defense a reasonable starting point? It seems like an offer below that would not be serious.

I work at a small firm with not that many workable templates so I usually have to do everything from scratch like drafting motions, pleadings, and researching all potential counts every time. Do bigger firms have better and more templates that allow you to have to do less research?

I just found out that an associate (same experience level) who billed fewer hours than me and had less collections got a 10k raise while I only got a 2.5K raise. She is in a different office, and her supervising partner is incredibly nice and understanding. My supervising partner is a total dick to everyone (not just me) and I got shafted. I'm waiting on a verdict for a civil jury trial (first one) and I want to go snowboarding tomorrow. They deliberated from 9-5 today with no verdict. Is it super frowned upon if I zoom in (it was a zoom trial) in a car or on the mountain or a lodge or something? Those in L&E at small to mid size firms, how is your WLB?

I’m a 5th year associate and decided to stop taking a paycheck this year for a larger percentage of fees. I’m in a firm that gets a lot of high fee cases but has just 2 attorneys. I have about 20 good nursing home cases and am working out the contract. I don’t think I should pay more than 20% overhead with 40% fees on my cases considering Firm gets 100% of owner cases and 60% of mine. Granted, 99% of my cases came from Firm/Boss. I’ve made about $80K so far . Thoughts? Am I asking too much?
