does anyone have any pointers on what a cost consultant typically slashes/picks apart ? Never worked with one and would like some pointers

Everything. Literally line item by line item. But it’s up to you to fight for what you think is important to not jeopardize the creative. Also, make the cost consultant your friend and your life will be much easier.

^^^ YES YES F’ING YES ! ! !

The best relationships I’ve had are when I treat the cc like my Partner. Like We both understand production and it’s our job to deliver the best outcome for the creative and the budget. Too many producers are adversarial. When you engage a cc in a partnership, they are more likely to hear the things you really want to fight for and to listen when you need to push back. I always approach every convo like ‘ here’s how I’m thinking we approach this. What do you think?’ Or ‘attached please find the first round bid. I’ve made some notes about my reactions. I’d love to hear yours. Can we chat before I respond to the production company, it would be great to go back to them with unified issues and concerns.’ This way they are part of the team and you’re working for the client—together—but you’ve always got your creative team and the production co in your bullseye and they’ve got the client and the budget in theirs

Always offer to get on the phone and walk them through your calendar and how the budget reflects that, your review time and uncertainties with clients, and possible paint points. Make them feel as though you’re on their team and going into the job transparently. What’s not helpful for your relationship with them is just increasing your bid so they can slash it down, then they’ll feel like you’re cheating them in areas still.

like

Make sure you have a pre-bid meeting with agency, client and cc on the phone. Be as detailed as possible. If the cc understands the specs, the more likely they will not be so nick picky. And like was mentioned earlier, many cc’s and clients have pre-bid forms and cost guidelines to fill out before the pre-bid. If everyone is on board, it will make your life easier. CC’s with a production background are great bc they get it. You will run into some that are just purchasing departments and look at things as widgets. Those are the tougher battles.

like

Everything. But the one item I hate and see is the removal of storyboard costs. As the cost consultants see that
“As a cost of doing business”. Which I think is a load of crap

like

Did you have a pre-bid meeting? Do you have the CCs preferred forms (pre-bid, spec sheets, bid comparison)? If not get on the phone with the cc. Talk to them about schedule and get their forms and set a pre-bid meeting with account, client and cc. That will make your life easier when going thru bids with cc.

#1 Pad your budget but don’t go cray. They’ll notice if you go too high. You can always go down in cost but never up

As well as padding their own pockets. I absolutely hate working with them

Exactly. They hire an artist. The artist gets paid. It should be a line item on the bid.

line by line. often they want to hear your rationale. It’s not a fight to the death on each item but for sure they will request reductions.

Any advice on how to rediscover the passion for your career?

I currently create social media content for a business I’m not really interested in. I used to create graphics, and I loved it, but over time, I’ve moved more into recruitment social media, less creating and designing, more content planning. I’d like to do more commercial marketing, but I feel like I’ve lost my spark.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.

I just listened to an interview of a creative director recount their path towards copywriting at a famous ad agency. It could not have been a more textbook case of failing upwards as a white man.

It would seem the only thing you need to make it as an advertising creative is to have lots of not particularly original ideas. Practically every other skill is unnecessary. If you’re a white man.

That this level of mediocrity passes for talent explains why so many agency briefs are so lame.

Testing TV files for Extreme Reach

Is there a website or portal you can use to test TV files before submitting? I have a client who handles their own traffic, so anytime Extreme Reach rejects or even questions something that is not a problem, it gets kicked back and a bunch of clients get CC'd on an email saying: "this failed QA."

At every other agency I've worked on, we would be able to handle any kickback or tweaks internally with zero client involvement. I'd love a way to test files.
