Does anyone have any primers on a Backdoor Roth? I save a significant amount of money every year (finance) but curious what the advantages of this are, and if I should use it

It’s not that it’s an advantage, it’s just if you’re above the income limit you should do it for your IRA. Otherwise you have to contribute to a traditional IRA but can’t deduct contributions, meaning only growth in the account is tax free. You would pay taxes both upfront and upon withdrawal

Backdoor Roth IRA is tax free on contribution and gain, which is much better than the traditional IRA.

Look into Mega Backdoor Roth if your employer offers after/tax contributions converted to Roth

Apparently IAPP had a webinar this week on hiring in the privacy field. My mentee and a few law students I know all watched and it sounds like a lot of the advice was pretty bad. I wish IAPP would tailor things for attorneys versus compliance, consulting, engineers, etc. I feel like they are doing such a disservice to everyone by trying to cater to all audiences at once.

For those who use YNAB, how do you manage keeping money in some of the long-term categories vs. investing in the market? For example, I don't need a new car now but I probably will in the next 5 years. YNAB tools would suggest I save up for this using money in savings, but I feel that money would be best invested. Same thing applies to home improvement projects, vacations, etc.

Husband & I bought a home in DC suburbs Apr 2021. Buyer’s remorse because my job became indefinitely remote making it hard to build a social life here - 1/2 our friends moved away in last 1.5 years. Thinking of moving to PA in 1-3 years where we have friends & family. Do you recommend renting out our home? Or sell it for nest egg after 2 yr mark to avoid capital gains tax & potentially just before the real estate peak (maybe 2025 if 18 year cycle+2007)? Husband wants to rent it, I want to sell.

Hi friendly people! I need help assessing my renting vs buying options.

I live in Chicago. I’ve been living in my current space for three years renting a 1200 sq fr apartment 2 blocks from Wrigley for $700/mo (total rent is $1400 but I have a roommate.)

I’ve been considering buying a place for several years and haven’t pulled the trigger because hoa + taxes in most situations is over $1k.

For ref a nice one bed and one bath close to the lake is $230k avg hoa $500. But no separate ...

What’s an ideal minimum net worth to have by 30 years old? I know everyone’s path is different and retirement plan is different, so let’s go with HCOL area for someone looking to retire by 55.

Would you take a job that pays well ($100k more) but not very interesting to meet your FIRE goal? It may even be a step down in your career but well… it pays well.

Or would you take another job that you are excited for, mentally challenging, definitely going to be more stressful but it is going to push you toward a more fulfilling work (at least to my ego 🤣). It pays a lot less.

I found this group a while ago and joined b/c I liked the words in the title, but thought it just meant putting most of your money in your savings account. Didnt really read anything here as I’m just a year out of college and have lots of student loans, and a lot of you seemed much smarter & far along.
Finally decided to look things up and going to take my first steps: maxing out my 401(k) & setting up a Roth IRA, and putting my money in the S&P. Excited to get started on this journey!

Would you move to a different city, pay 50% more in rent for more career opportunities and increase in quality of life?

1k -> ~1.5k in rent. Already max all accounts, 100k NW @26yo no debt - 100k income.

Living remotely in the mountains since I wanted to be outdoors all the time. After a year, I've hit my limit and want to go back into an office/bigger city to socialize more. Balancing between FIRE and living life now.

Is an In plan Roth rollover the same as a mega back door conversion? I have like $20k in after tax contributions in my 401k; I’m wanting to put this in a vehicle where I avoid capital gains in the future (like a Roth IRA which I already do)

Those in HCOL cities how do you make decisions on home Reno budgets? I know not aligned to fire, but we need more space and buying a house in our area is north of $1.3 M

Hi I am pretty new here but I like the idea and looking for some advice. I am in a good position I make 120k, I am 26 and got an apartment from my parents so I save around 4k a month and can still enjoy my life and travel. Currently I put most of my money in ETF‘s and a little bit in crypto. What would you do in my situation and what advices can you give me?

Hey guys, Im 25 and I have about 35k in the bank, 21k in retirement, 41k personal invested, 5k in crypto. No debt. Is it smart to invest more during this down market or save for a house/wedding or something else that’s smarter?

I am 37 and just started aggressively saving 4 years ago (beyond maxing my 401k). I have around $500k in retirement accounts and $350k in savings and investment accounts. About $200k in equity in my house (half paid off). Beyond maxing my 401k I have 6k/month I save/invest. Ideally want to retire in 8 years (45). What are good options to do with the 6k/month? Right now I just blindly buy mutual funds.

Currently looking to refinance my first home (4.125) and considering a few options. What do you recommend?

Background: 36, single and hoping to meet someone, would move from townhome at that point. Would like to save on interest & reduce costs in the time being. No other expenses but car is 10 years old and would prob need a new one within 5 years.

Loan amt: $220k
Current Principle + Interest 4.125% : $1104

Refinance options:
7/6 arm 2.25%: $848
30 yr 2.87%: $920

Should I have multiple Roth IRAs? I have one Roth IRA that I rolled in my previous employers roth 401k and using it to do backdoor Roth IRA. Does it make a difference to have everything in account?

Moving from a miserable IB job for a small pay cut, but I can now actively trade without compliance giving me trouble. After rent & taxes, I’ve got about 10k per month to save; what’s the best asset allocation / distribution for a 24 year old who has a longish horizon and average risk tolerance?
