Does anyone have chronic (but medicated) depression? How do you deal with the bad days when the lethargy impacts your reasoning?

I always bring running gear to work. While it’s very difficult to get the motivation to run while at those lows, once you get going, I find it has a positive snowball effect on the work day.

I’ve been on anti-depressants since adolescence. I take care of my physical and mental health so am fine on most days. But I still have fleeting periods of depression, where my thinking becomes slow and muddled. I lack motivation so struggle to meet deadlines. How do you cope on these days and penetrate the brain fog?

This is me most days. Unfortunately I don’t know of any effective and expedient ways to shake the funk. Worse still is the fact that because it’s in my head, others will show zero empathy and think I’m just lazy.

I personally feel that I cannot bill a client to sit in my office in a fog. So if I feel this coming on, I immediately leave my office to walk, eat, shop etc. I try to deal with it immediately and do things like a big Italian lunch at a nice restaurant, a piece of jewelry, and a workout. During these times, I prioritize over everything else what will make me happy and try to do only that. Also try setting up a weekly appointment with a therapist to get all the stress off your chest.

Agree with associate 1. Do you exercise? Find a sport or activity that you enjoy and try to do it every day or as often as possible, even if it’s just walking.

I have a yoga mat in my office and use the Down Dog app (for free!) even if it’s for 10 minutes. Sometimes a little movement and quiet can help me reset. No one notices or cares, so it’s a win all around. I also confided in my paralegal about my situation after about two years, and if I’m having a really off day I can mention it to her so I feel less alone and isolated with it. Truly the best thing you can do it be gentle with yourself and know that the fog will eventually lift.

I make sure I exercise. Also, be nice to yourself — you’ll make up the billables another day.

Echoing what everyone else has said about exercise. Also, I’ve found that sometimes my “fog” can last a week or more, but that I can produce decent work product in the mornings. So I try to do all of my most challenging work during that time, and save the afternoon for easier or more entertaining tasks. Weekly therapy, getting enough sleep, and consistent exercise all keep it manageable, but some days will still be hard and you have to be nice to yourself to get out of those low points.

Hello. What do you think is the protocol. I worked on a concept, script for a spot for a few months but left for a new job. It got produced eventually. Obviously things changed but do I get credit?

Am I an attractive candidate at all? Or is it silly to think I could jump soon for a comp increase? 1 yoe BAH fed (7 yoe in nonprofit sector before that), currently at 90k. Have some generalist certifications (agile, prosci, working on instructional design). Non-technical, no master’s. Resume is mostly attractive bc of extensive international/cross-cultural experience & DoS experience. Am I still too “meh” with only 1yoe & no tech skills?

Hey, I’m looking at applying for solution engineering roles at other companies (at the moment Okta) and was wondering what peoples thoughts are on the salary increase I should look to achieve. I’ve been at my current role for 3 years and have been promoted once but feel like my pay is still below the average. Currently make 130k with a 70/30 split between base pay and bonuses. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is anyone here content with just being a run-of-the-mill creative? Does there come a point where you’re not seen as valuable anymore? I’ve been in the industry for five years now and basically made nothing good or interesting (I work at a big nyc holding company owned agency). I’m already in my mid 30s so I’m getting worried that l’m getting to the point where I’ll be knocking on 40 with the book (and salary) of a 26 year-old.

Have been pinged for a possible role as Director of Operations at a promising looking startup with a 50%% pay increase & equity. It looks like an amazing opportunity.. but my husband and I have just started trying for our first kid, and I'm not sure about leaving the stability and benefits of Big 4, even though I feel like I have run out of career growth here. Has anyone changed jobs at a similar point, or worked at a startup as a new mom, that might be able to share perspective or opinions?
