Actually I'm dealing with this exact issue now.
I have a GI disability and I don't know how much to share about it. It's uncomfortable and the problem is that when I become sick with it I am often unable to work at all. The remote environment has helped, but it always scares me the idea that someone will think I am a less reliable candidate when I am interviewing for a position.
I feel this. Hard. IME with having an episodic condition, my symptoms paint me as inconsistent, unreliable. As hard as I try at work, if I get stressed out, I can't work or at least not with other people. I need offline time to regroup. Neurotypicals take consistency for granted.
Honestly, I mostly have experience hiding it. I have anxiety/depression that is severe enough to prevent me from leaving the house when it is 'acting up' as I call it. A lot of people don't understand that conditions that depression and anxiety can occur in a more long-term life disrupting way so the few times I tried to disclose early in my career I was met with strange looks. I learned to hide it and to become okay with being tagged as the employee that was constantly out of PTO because I would call out when I got sick. COVID pushing everyone to work from home has actually made me a better worker than I ever was in an office.
Feel this too. But I hate that I've learned to mask. Ever since I was diagnosed, I have fed my ego on stigma, because I actually want to have the conversation, and lead it. I can manage that interpersonally, but enterprise accommodations teams aren't ready to have that conversation. Seems they'd rather pay a mf not to work (take disability) than accommodate one.
I've disclosed that I'm Hard of Hearing. We have a group that can help you with assistive devices (e.g. headphones, large keyboards, etc). Unfortunately, they can't subsidize hearing aids. We also acknowledge other kinds of disabilities, but I'm not aware of the kind of support that is given. So, check with your organization if they can support you one way or another.
