Hey guys, I'm an Industry Advisor (basically the same as the Value Advisor / formerly Value Engineering role) at SAP and come from a non-tech background (management consulting). Anyone else here with a MC background? I fell into this position a little while ago and have mostly enjoyed it, curious to see what other non-technical folks think of it.

In the next week the team of five that I work with will be reduced to two- my boss being one of the people leaving. I’m the most eligible person for the job, but haven’t even been in my role for a year. Stepping up would mean having to immediately trying to backfill 3 jobs, being responsible huge supply chain risk to revenue, and eventually managing the transfer of my whole department to outside the US. How do you draw a line between great opportunity and setting yourself up for failure?

I have made huge progress in my current role where I make (65k) yearly and have been with for almost a year. It’s a WFH position but I have to attend the conferences I lead. Due to the immense workload I have been taking on, I asked my manager if I would be considered to be promoted to a manager position they are hiring for (who will be doing the same thing I am doing) She told me to wait another year since that is where they are aiming to push me towards. I feel demotivated but I love it here.

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.
