Does anyone have experience with placing their bar license on inactive mode in California?

I'm going to be out of the country until late summer of 2021 and I'd rather pay the inactive bar dues (~$200 compared to ~$500).

I'd like to weigh the pros and cons of this.
- Is there a disadvantage for clerkships?
- Will I have to catch up on a gazillion CLEs or just the ones from the current year (the balance for which I'll be active)?

Would like to get some input!

Just keep it active. So many people, random and otherwise, will look at your calbar profile over the course of your career, and they will all wonder what happened to you in 2021. Also, I’m not sure that you can go inactive for half a year.

Anyone know anything about Gatewood capital? Are they legit?

Salam, as Ramadan is approaching I just wanted to alert everyone about buying Israeli Mezdool dates (stolen trees from stolen land by oppressing Palestinian people). The country of origin of these packages are Israel. They’ve gotten smarter and packaging it with no trace of who and where the dates come from (which is btw illegal in USA). Yaffa and Zaytoun dates are only Palestinian dates. Please share this with your friends and family. JA

Do you guys organize your emails? If so, how? Separate files? Color coding?

Giving 2 week notice to my firm tomorrow but have a feeling they won’t have me stay the two weeks. Anyone have this happen to them?

A question for the associates:
How should I talk to a new associate on my team (4 mos.) about critical issues including 1) spending too much time on a single project; 2) not meeting expectations in terms of number of billable hours; 3) botching easy procedural issues? This person has significant skills and writes very well. But their work is consistently turned in at the last minute, they have to be corrected on procedures regularly, and they never come talk to me without an invitation.

Anyone’s firms on here asking them to work from home because of the virus? Mines only sent out a pamphlet and asked us to wash our hands via email this morning. I work in South Florida.

Leaving my firm after being here for over 5 years. Wish I had kept better track of the number of deals and projects I worked on and the emails I'd want to save. All the emails will be lost to me forever, which is an odd feeling.

Good morning! It's Tony coming from HyperDraft HQ in Los Angeles. Looking forward to chatting with folks about leaving Big Law (or surviving it), transitioning in-house, Legal Tech, or any thing and everything about the legal industry.

Quick background, I'm a former Big Law M&A and in-house attorney turned Legal Tech founder. Now I spend my time creating software solving all the painpoints y'all hate.

Drop any questions you have below in the comments. Hope your day is off to a great start!

I’m currently at a small litigation boutique (3 partners/4 associates) and am looking to move on. I have an opportunity to go in house as a litigation attorney with a financial services company. Anyone have advice for the transition? What should I expect?

I applied for a government attorney job in September and got an interview. In late October I was told I wasn’t the top choice but was on the list and would definitely get the job eventually. There are many attorneys there who have that position. So it’s not like I’m waiting for one specific attorney to retire. I was told last week that there probably wouldn’t be an opening for me before March. Have other people had to wait a long time for a government job opening?

Best way to connect with PE firms for business development purposes? Plan on sending a short introduction in hopes of getting a meeting but wondering if there is a better way.

I particularly don't want to work in this last week of the year because I want the billable hours to count towards 2022.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think that long-arm statutes are terrible for our system. You shouldn't be able to file in the state that you live in. As a policy matter, I feel the default should always be where the defendant lives unless the contract states otherwise.

What's your A/R per month or per quarter? Please list area of law and years of practice. So many posts about billable hours but at the end of the day, isn't it all about the dollar dollar bills y'all?

Salary and interview check.

Applied to a Tech Transactions Associate position at Greenberg Traurig, looking for 2-6 YOE and stating $190k-$225k comp. in the post. Got a email from HR to set up an hour long initial call.

How many phases are in the interview process?

Is the stated salary in line with their other Tech. Trans. associates? Do they negotiate salaries for laterals?

For the LGBTQ+ lawyers, if your firm offers reproductive assistance, how did you start the process of planning to start a family? Are there better years as an associate to target having a child? How do you (or should you) approach it with your partner leadership, or should you just dive right in with the HR contacts? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Opposing counsel will not answer emails or calls regarding adjournment of a motion. How long do I want until I ask the court for one? Return date is coming up in a day
