Same here, I am also an immigrant with a late start on my career. I had huge insecurities around money. Even now I am 10+ into my career with 1.5m assets I am still hesitant to even buy a house. my kids live in this cramped, cheap and dated apartment with me. And I can’t even enjoy a nice day out with my family because I am stressed about turning 40 soon and face ageism in the workplace and have to live off my 40-65 on government cheese.

I was just about to ask if you come from a family of immigrants and/or a family that struggled financially. Speaking as someone with a similar background myself and a partner with this same background, this is likely a HUGE factor. My family came to this country with nothing and they saved every penny they could. When the anxiety gets bad, remind yourself that your family came to this country for a better life and greater opportunities, especially for their kids. This includes quality healthcare, housing, access to food and clean drinking water, safety, general comfort, etc. You’re clearly very financially responsible, therefore you shouldn’t deprive yourself of the things your family came to this country for you to have access to.

You can do it. My partner is worse than me when it comes to this so I constantly remind him of this because he struggles to spend money things he absolutely needs (he’s also very financially responsible). Is there someone in your life who can remind you of this when your anxiety gets really bad?

I also chose a career to allow me to get richer than my immigrant parents because they sacrificed a lot for me. Maybe the pressure also comes from my background but I don’t know.

What are peoples opinions on work from home? It seems to be an unpopular opinion but as a junior I despise it. I work 3 feet from my bed, I find the barriers of a phone/email between me and a senior to add a huge amount of stress to my life and I think it’s stunting my career development at my firm because I can’t build relationships as effectively. I’ve never at all had mental health issues before but now am really starting to feel burnt out and anxious most of the time. What do you think?

Insurance Defense Associate new to group. Just finished first year on the defense side after 6 years on the Plaintiff side, joined 3 weeks before lockdown. WFH with 6 and 2 year old. While billing 2k in a year with kids at home all day is nuts, you will not get better balance in a small pltff firm. Small firm partners are allergic to WFH, and can't afford to be flexible with when an associate gets to their work. The support of a larger firm is what has kept me alive this past year.
