does anyone have friends that are business owners and feel like consulting really doesn’t teach you much? i truly look up to entrepreneurs and the infinite hats they wear. 💭

No job will teach you every skill. If you want to learn more - identify the skills you want. Identify the mastery level you’re hoping to achieve. Then go find opportunities to practice those skills till you achieve your desired mastery.

I went into consulting because I wanted to learn about of a variety of different business functions. I also wanted to know how executives make decisions. I also wanted to learn the cutting edge thinking.

If I want to learn how to run a small business, I’m in the wrong job. If I want to learn how to swim and I’m training for a marathon, it doesn’t mean my training is worthless but it sure isn’t helpful for my goal.

You should identify what you goal really is, and try to worry less about missing out and more about finding what inspires you.

My father always told me, “Be a Chief, not just an Indian” (Dated metaphor - no derogatory intentions).
He runs the family business that my great, great grandmother started over 105 years ago. My aunt and little brother work with him.
There are a lot of benefits to entrepreneurship, though there are also grave stakes. I don’t know if consulting ‘teaches’ you much, but it presents opportunities to develop/refine skills and observe the outcome of their application (for yourself, team, firm, and client).
It’s never too late to start something new. Best of luck figuring it out, if that is your intention.
