Does anyone have life insurance on their employees?

I tried for years to get my former firm to obtain a life insurance policy on me for the firm’s benefit before I hit 40 as premiums increase every year. I was a key employee and the stated intent was that I would take over the firm someday. The owner could not wrap her brain around why a whole life policy that accrues cash value would be beneficial to the firm then or in the future.

But, this is a great way to survive the sudden death of a key employee. It’s also a great way to store funds away in case a buy-out for anyone at the firm is needed later. It can be borrowed against as well. Whole life policies for the firm’s benefit are a great succession planning tool.

I also asked the owner to get a policy for the firm’s benefit for her while she was still younger, too. That was also a no go. She was the only partner/owner at the time. So, the only person who would have had the ability to touch the funds would have been her.

But, what do I know. I mean, I’ve talked to people who do business valuations because of the kind of work I handle for clients and taken several courses on business succession to try to figure out how to do it right, but that’s probably not relevant.

If you decide to purchase policies then talk to your financial planner and CPA to figure out how to pick the right policy (limits, etc.) to maximize the investment potential.

I have not thought about this but now I am. Thank you.

Small firm employee here (<10 lawyers). Firm provides a very small life insurance policy of $50,000 through Cigna.

Employees’ benefit. I must have misread your question. Didn’t know that was a thing other than a “key man” policy.

Making a lot of money relative to the average but feeling poor? Median after-tax income was ~$55,000 in 1981 and was ~$73,000 in 2020. Using a Bank of Canada inflation calculator $55,000 in 1981 is equivalent to ~$165,000 today, which would put someone in the top 10% of earners today. But in 1981 the median family had that extra money. Who can I blame?

Can anyone recommend an app or software for tracking billable hours to make it easier to put together and submit timesheets? I work for a small firm and all of our billing/invoicing is done manually. Every couple of weeks I go through my notes to type up my timesheets and I’m wondering if there’s an app that can record my time as I work and then put that all together categorized by client to submit for invoicing. I don’t need to note how much a particular client pays per hour.

What are some subtle red flags to pass on working for a company/team?

One example was a panel of interviewers at a top tech company within FAANG (is it MAANG now?) constantly rubbing their temples in a stressful manner when talking about their day to day… Another was an interviewer telling me that the leader disregards other’s calendars, senior or not, because they should trust that whatever meeting she has is important… so thoughts?

So if I attend a 2 day client workshop, do I’ve to file an amendment? Also, if you working out of a client location M-T, would I be using the client location to fill up timesheet in DTE?

This question might anger some, but not meant to be provoking. Does anyone else feel that half the jobs in tech (scrum master, project manager, product manager, etc.) are more hindering than helpful? I feel like productivity would sky rocket if we didn’t have 10+ hours a week added of admin work/agile ceremonies/status meetings, and you just let developers and analysts do their job. Why are we spending hours learning how to estimate story points (for example) rather than improving production?
