Advice & resources? My spouse and I are starting to make good money (ages 28 & 31, $105k & $70k) with $10k in savings (we were hit hard financially this year) and 2 car payments.

We live in a cheap apartment ($1.3k) that is sh*tty. Don’t quite have a down payment (especially not in ATX). Is it dumb to rent a house for a year at $3k/month while we save up again?

Hi fishes, what is the % of your salary that you save per year?

My company recently moved me to a new cubicle. However the new cubbies is so loud, I’ve asked to move and they have found a new cubicle for me but it’s in a worse location (by the bathroom). Should I ask for an office? I’m in my late 20s and have only been at the company a little over a year. Do other young in-house lawyers have offices?

I have accepted an offer at another company and because I have some equity vesting at the end of February, I’m delaying my departure. Is 3/4 weeks notice too much or should I just wait to give standard. I would have wanted to give more notice even if the award vest wasn’t a concern but don’t want to jeopardize that.

Do others feel lonely in their roles? I moved in-house from a firm a few months ago, and while I recognize that the virtual nature of the work is a huge factor (I haven’t yet met my coworkers, so it’s harder to make friends), I also am in a small legal department where everyone is far more senior than me, so I don’t have any camaraderie. I’m glad to not only be working with lawyers (like at my firm), but I do miss the ease of having peers with whom I could easily make friends and chat.

How long did it take you to adjust to your 1st in-house role? I started my first in-house role a few months ago. This job is exactly in-line with my law firm experience….but every time I join a call I feel like everyone is speaking a different language. There are just so many acronyms, company lingo terms I’m not familiar with & company-specific processes. I’m just wondering when everything will start to “click”….because right now I’m super overwhelmed.

Big law M&A attorney with only ~1 year experience (but prior experience in corporate accounting/finance at F500). Really hate big law, so I'm starting to explore other options. What kinds of roles/positions are possible in house? What type of compensation? Please don't reference the Robert Half stuff...unless I don't know how to read any of those sources, they don't seem to be helpful at all at helping me navigate this.

Are there any employment counsel who will be 100% remote forever--e.g. live in LA but company is in the Bay? I'm in Southern California and see lots of Bay postings but I'm skeptical how effective fully remote employment counsel can be considering quasi-HR/ER role.

When an in-house recruiter at another company cold-emails you, is it fair to ask them for the rough offer range in your initial response back (to avoid wasting everyone’s time)? Or do you owe them the courtesy of taking at least a screening phone call and asking then?

I started my first in-house role about 4 months ago and I don’t think it’s the right fit. I love the no billable hours aspect, but otherwise I miss the structure of being at a firm. How long do you think I should try to stick this out before I move on? I want to give the job a real shot - and i know the transition to in-house can be jarring…but I also don’t want to spend too much time in a job that is a wrong fit.

6th year biglaw associate in HOU. Long considered a move in-house but overwhelmed on where to start. Any recommendations on TX recruiters specializing in-house? Welcome advice on searching generally, resume (haven’t touched since LS), etc. Interested in HOU and DAL (though not trad energy) and my practice is roughly split between M&A/PE transactions and capital markets (SPACs, trad IPOs, HY, Section 13/16 reporting, etc.). My company (a renewable energy developer) is being acquired by a much larger energy company in a platform deal. I'm currently part of a 3 person legal team, with each attorney supporting different parts of the business, and having different areas of expertise. Anyone have any insight into the impact/fallout of these types of deals on the acquired company's legal department? I'm being told everything will be the same (but with better benefits), but who knows!

What does "unlimited" PTO really mean? Accepted an in-house position. What's an acceptable amount of vacation time to take per year? (I'm coming from private practice where I could take vacation whenever I wanted as long as I hit my billables). Generally, I take two 1.5 week vacations a year and a smattering of long weekends (like a Friday or Monday off here and there). Obviously will not take that much time in the first year of a new job, but hope to get back to it. Reasonable?
