Does anyone have thoughts on taking the CFA Level 1 exam (as M&A/PE attorney)?

You have time to do anything other than work?

I’m a CPA and I practice M&A and PE and at least at the associate level or junior partner no one will really care about the title at all. It would not be worth it in my opinion. It is always worth it to genuinely learn about finance and accounting but it’s not worth it to get more letters after your name at this point.

like

Not sure why you would put yourself through that.

Would you have time to get the number of experiential hours needed to actually get a CFA certification? Even then, what would that offer your clients? Doubt they’d use a law firm for business-side deal analysis.

OP I completed level 1 and found it was nice to gain broad knowledge of the markets. I can’t say it was that helpful in my practice but I pursued level 1 while I’m law school (more time than I have now to study). I’m sitting for level 2 in May but studying is nearly impossible with the workload.

All of that is to say it won’t give you a huge advantage but if there is another motivation (wanting to learn more; which is the case for me), then I wouldn’t caution you against it.

Why

Thanks for the feedback. I suppose I’m also thinking about getting the CFA as a back-up option to working in a PE fund (as to be a more valuable candidate).

Only worth it if your intention is not to stay in practice

I’m a 5th year Corporate/M&A attorney with opportunity to move in-house with a wealth mgmt firm. Would retain of counsel status with current firm with small override on pure legal referrals. All other work would be “business advisory” in nature billed to wealth mgmt. The objective is for the wealth mgmt firm to offer a wholistic suite of services for clients (e.g., M&A, governance, operational, tax, estate plans, investments). Thoughts on the move? It’s unproven, but seems exciting.

Let’s see who remembers their MPRE. Just found a position at my dream firm I would like to interview for; however, I was also just placed on a deal where dream firm is the opposite counsel. I don’t want my current firm to know I’m thinking of leaving in case I don’t, so asking for a conflicts waiver doesn’t seem feasible. But the deal won’t close until next year, so I doubt the position will be around if I wait that long. Any advice?

Best resources for a very green corporate transactions junior associate to get up to speed?

I just made a switch from a boutique litigation firm to a mid-sized corporate transactions practice. It’s been about 3 months, and I’m simply not meeting the partner’s (understandably high) standards. I love the work, and want to keep doing this, but need to start delivering better work product faster, I just don’t know what I don’t know.

Curious as to how many deals at once is typical for a first year associate to take on (M&A, mostly private equity clients). Deal size is lower middle market and I’ve worked on deals ranging from $1-$110M. 2 deals at once is plenty for me, but it seems like my peers are able to take on more than that at once and still do fine. Maybe I’m just a slow learner/out of my league at the big law firm I’m at.
