Usually “best” and “culture” don’t match.
The best agencies:
- great work/award winning, no work life balance, competitive culture, teams working against each other, more risks of getting laid off if you’re not a top performer at all times
- or best and good culture - but hard to get in (top 5% of the industry make it to the first interview)
Usually places with good culture aren’t the ones with the most remarkable work. I personally prefer the latter (been to “the best” and it doesn’t make you happier) but just to manage expectations.
Also if you’re looking for creativity, New York isn’t the best place for that. Many of clients that pay bills are banks and telco - rent and salaries are higher - margins are lower - so agencies and brands are more risk averse.
I’m in NY and I love it but the price to pay for an awesome city is more chances of having your soul sucked at work. However, lots of awesome, creative, talented people, but not necessarily the briefs to match their expectations.
I’d say go for a city like Chicago / Boston / LA (maybe) and a mid tier agency for culture and out of the box opportunities.
Unless you’re ok with lone wolf workaholism type of vibe and you can try Droga5 or Anomaly. And Wieden (good culture, good work), good luck.
I did hear good things about Giant Spoon though in terms of culture and work.
But anyway hiring is tough right now overall tho. Lots of layoffs.
