Does anyone here work for a state university’s GC office? Considering lateraling as a 3rd year litigation associate to a university’s GC office. It’s clear the work life balance would be better (SET office hours and no working late) but trying to decide if the benefits outweigh the pay cut. At the firm there is no set vacation day amount per year, just get your work done. Wondering if that’s similar in the GC world. Any advice or comparison from firm life to university GC would be appreciated.

You’ll have lots of set state holidays and days off (vacation days allotment could increase with seniority but generally something along the lines of 10 days to start) in a university employment setting. Another big factor down the road could be educational benefits for dependents.

Certainly worth exploring if it is an area that interests you.

Consider social security/pension effects. Can really be nice if you plan to work a lot of years in the same system, but otherwise worth looking into what you feel comfortable with there.

What are ways to get more vacation time?

I’m feeling a little suffocated with the standard two weeks with all my family events this year.

I have an issue: just been informed by compliance I have a violation. Using a brokerage restricted and at this point I am at a loss. I sold off all my stock just to comply. Then put the only stock I kept with the broker, the other one is my wife’s employer 401k savings broker. The instructions say they will reach me within 90 days for next steps. It also says there may be financial penalties.

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

How would you rate your ratios for work, play, and rest?

My life's mostly been 85% work/serious stuff (includes academia), 10% rest, and 5% play.

I've only started to learn to rest more this year and learning to accept lower productivity (was part of the hustle culture).

Q: How do I learn the concept of play? Didn't have that in my childhood growing up. All serious, no fun. Has anyone transitioned successfully?

I feel like a boring, old lady 😔😒

So here is my dilemma:
- based in the UK
- opportunity for lateral internal move (culture&engagement) or stay where I am (reward). I am mid level IC struggling to progress due to flat structure so considering lateral move then hopefully up from there.
- 2 primary aged children, currently have flexibility in current/new role too
- Husband just got accepted on a international rotation which means I will be single parent for the short term.

What to do? Go with the unknown or coast comfortably?

I’m currently at a medium sized tech startup. I was interviewing for a role that would be a bump in pay and title at a multinational public F50 company. At first, the hiring manager and head of legal were very complementary about my experience. Almost too much so. After a week of interviews with the team (softball-esq), I was informed that if I wanted to join, they would bring me on at a lower title. I’m not sure about comp yet. But if comp is still an increase + experience at a public..
