Does anyone here work in book publicity/marketing?

I currently work in B2B marketing and have determined what I really want to do is market books, especially fiction. I'm looking for some insight into the industry to understand if it's possible to make the shift, and if so, what it will take.

If anyone's available to talk, please let me know! Would be very grateful for insights.

Very competitive field, so be ready for a long road. Save up and have a backup plan. Looks like you've got someone in here willing to help out with networking a bit, so that's definitely helpful. Good luck!

I did an MA in Publishing and also did internships and freelance gigs in the industry, happy to answer questions/share insights.

May be easier for you to enter the industry by going into marketing non-fiction first, via a publisher or imprint that also does fiction, and transitioning from within the industry. That’s not to say it’s impossible - it’s just really competitive as it is within the industry, and especially within certain publishing houses.

Imagine you're looking for a remote job at a large company with a sophisticated marketing function, strong manager, and room for growth. Making good traction, but then you're contacted by a company in a niche that FASCINATES you...like you read books about this subject for fun, you'd probably love this job. It's remote, the salary is good, the manager is nice, but you'd be the most senior marketing person; the company is about 200 people. What would you do?
