Does anyone know a leadership book that fairly represents black people? We had to read a book called "BOLD" and it centered around these 4 characteristics that leaders have along with the argument...

that you have to be born with the characteristics, its not a nurture situation. Came off privileged to me - not to mention I don't trust that her study of over 100 people included a lot of black leaders given the examples in her book. I'm just sick of all these leadership books that companies make us read and assume that we all have an equal starting point. "It's so easy to be a great leader, just follow these steps.."

The Little Black Book of Success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women by Elaine Meryl Brown, Marsha Haygood and Rhonda Joy Mclean.
It offers practical advice for Black women at any career level. There are a few points that I find a little outdated (generational differences with the writers) but overall solid leadership gems. Gender specific but helpful nonetheless.

Hi friends! I’m looking for resources to help me be successful in a “Functional Lead” role.

The role is in FinTech
I’m responsible for strategy, comms and key partnerships for a bank product. It reports through Customer Experience but touches product, Ops. marketing. It’s basically a Project Manager role but more nuanced.

Anyone out there in a role like this? Any books. videos or even best practices to share?

Cisco

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

What books/reading materials or videos would you consider essential for c-suite leadership?

Hey all - how do you guys sell or lead things you aren’t genuine believing in? It’s almost like a fake it till you make it? I am often too genuine or objective.

I lead a team of women (ranging from 2-8 years into their careers) and want to advocate for their career growth with management. I’ve made the case for promotions and raises (have been pushing for this for months and keep being told “soon”—but I won’t give up), but I also want to try smaller asks and would love suggestions. Are there any books, one-off classes/trainings, virtual events, memberships, etc. that you’d recommend? Thank you!

What’s the best book you’ve read on creative leadership?

If you’re succeeding on all the right metrics (i.e., leadership loves you, clients love you, you’re participating on pitches, you’ve brought in clients, and you’re set up to inherit a book of business), but you’re still not super into it, being promoted to income partner won’t change things, right? Worth sticking out to see or jumping to go in house at a pre-IPO, late stage startup you find super exciting and interesting?

Ladies, need some advice. I am in Scrum Master role for tech team that is more senior engineers and architects. Feeling very out of the loop as I am not involved in all the discussions and then asked for progress on items from leaders and that am I not aware of..
the team gets Ad hoc requests so new items come up after that stand up and SM/ M will ping folks directly. Feeling like I have become an assistant who updates tickets and books meetings..

Honestly I don’t think agencies are going to exist the way they do 15-20 years from now. The way they operate is designed for burn out for employees. I’ve worked at a total of 5 agencies across Chicago and NYC, and things end up always being toxic and the work life balance is just not sustainable nor justifiable when I look back. I mean look across this app and see what people post in regards to advertising, we deserve better.

Remote vs in person for software developers in their early career. I started my career in 2021 fully remote. After the office opened again in 2022, I was able to learn a lot about the system from other people in the office and solve bugs faster. Without a doubt made my job easier. Lots of my colleagues still work from home in 2022. I can’t see why they are making it harder for themselves on purpose. I’m fairly confident they can afford to get to the office because they have teslas and shit.

Anyone have any insight/thoughts on the culture at Google for black employees? Leaving consulting because of the culture and had a black recruiter from Google reach out. I don't believe Google will be THAT much better but I don't have much of a reference point on the culture internally. The recruiter mentioned Strat Ops roles but has asked for my resume.
