Does anyone know about practicing med mal or PI in Texas? I’ve heard it’s terrible but does anyone know why? Are the damages caps that bad?

This guy’s ad is on during every Texas athletic event

I am in Ohio, where the success rate is at best 20%. I stopped MMP a few years ago after having it my practice for 30 years. If you solid financial backing, can wait years for potential recovery then … However as you get older, risking $150k on a case with a state documented loss rate of 80%, becomes Less desirable and financially reasonable. I loved doing med, but it’s no longer practical for me,

Worked at a PI firm this past summer, plaintiffs side. Not going back to that industry ever again.

The firm had just shut down their Med Mal practice. When I asked why, I was told that TX was a very friendly place with lots of protections in place for practitioners. As far as PI, there’s big money if you can own and operate your own firm. Like, big money.

Firm life was super chill, mostly because associates didn’t have to bill hours and mostly would work towards settling. Trials, on the other hand…

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who shares in this group. It truly helps me stay sober. I am approaching 12 months sober but have been struggling lately. While I have not relapsed, I’ve been close. Normally, before I get out of bed, I write down my reason to stat sober for the day, but lately the reasons have been lousy at best. But reading about everyone’s struggles and successes has helped get me through this past month. So thank you all for the inspiration to keep going strong!

Have you ever been racially discriminated against in a personal healthcare situation/not at work? While you were ill or in the hospital? Obviously horrible when it happens to anyone but it takes the cake for me when white people in healthcare discriminate about Black people when they don't know they work in the same field and know how they should be treated.

I have a job interview tomorrow with an employment litigation firm (under 10 attorneys). The two people interviewing me will be the office manager and an attorney (maybe partner? No info on that person on the website). I've never been interviewed by an office manager, so I'm thinking it's more of a screening session. Anyone have experience or advice on what that interview could look like?

Is it realistic to expect a first year to hit their hours? Our firm starts the proverbial clock on day 1. No credit given for 2 weeks of onboarding or continued first year trainings. No cushion for getting up to speed. Our cycle is September-August so idk if I should prepare to stress about this for the next 9 months or just do my best. I recently got a random call from a counsel offering a “plan” for catching up. That plan was billing 180/month for 9 months. No time off, not even holidays.

Our office received a itemized legal bill today from an Am Law 100 firm that was borderline. (Borderline as in somewhere between excessive and unethical, not borderline as in somewhere between expected and excessive.)

What’s the protocol on something like this? Do we redline it? Do we just wholesale slash the total? We do quite a bit of work in the space and hire out a couple thousand hours per year, so we have a very good feel for what is normal, what is high and what is absurd.
