Currently a first-year associate at a generally Florida-only law firm (only a couple offices outside of FL) with around 300 attorneys. Thinking about applying for positions at traditional big law firms for more resources, pay, and experience. 1) is this doable? 2) is this advisable?

Has anyone gone from BigLaw to start their own successful corporate/commercial law firm? How’d that go for you? In hindsight, would you do it all again? I worked at a boutique before joining BigLaw and the partners at the boutique seemed very happy/comfortable with their lifestyle, and they said they get paid more than when they were partners at a mid-tier firm.

I recently started a new job in ID coming from a practice area where I didn’t really have to worry about billables. It worked out for me because I’m a pretty fast learner/worker and got more stuff done. Like today, I had to draft law and motion and I finished it in an hour and a half. (will need revision, ofc) but when my supervising partner was looking at my billable hours, he said it was impossible that I finished it in that time. I foresee this happening often in the future. How do you bill for a project when your constantly getting distracted by other matters, calls, emails etc. I’m honestly just estimating what it should have taken.

I would appreciate any tips on training a paralegal/assistant while managing a heavy (Zoom) court and meeting schedule. My new assistant’s skill set is more narrow than I realized, and there is a lot to teach. I know training will pay off, but if there are some tried and true shortcuts I would love to hear them. I know there’s an evidentiary rule that it’s not “admissible” but that’s an evidentiary rule regarding trial.
