Depends on who their clients are and how successful they are. Majority in that business are just scraping by, but some reach insane success. You also don’t know how they are prioritizing their income. Maybe they aren’t saving, maybe they are. You can’t tell that just based on their clothes/bags.
For example: I was buying groceries the other day and the check out clerk noticed my Mercedes key. He asked what kind I drive because he just leased a a GLC AMG… Do with that information what you will..
A lot of make-up artists I know carry the expensive bags but cannot afford a down payment on a home. It’s all about perception. (Not downplaying freelancers at all). Some are very successful!
Many people carry significant debt to fund certain lifestyles and outward appearances. Few people have $0 credit card debt, $0 student loans, $0 car payment and own a home. This should be the goal. Most Americans don’t have this and don’t manage money this way. So yes people have flashy stuff, but based on statistics from the BLS and census, people are not making enough to have those things sans debt. Or as another poster said might be fakes.

In addition to the other comments, the expensive bags could be fakes

It varies widely. But something to think about is you have a W2 probably. Taxes are deducted by your employer, I assume you have benefits, contribute to retirement, etc while a self employed makeup artist is less likely to have that set up.
Expensive bags and things are pretty and shiny but not necessarily an indication of wealth.
Or in debt up to their eyeballs.
