Idk but as cheap and stingy as they are, I would be shocked if they did

likefunny

Fair enough! Haha

I didn’t think associates there had actual accrued vacation/leave days? When I worked there, it was the “take leave at your discretion but make your hours” mindset.

like

There are no vacation days. You can take the time you want, which is really no benefit at all.

like

LOL LBBS would never but there are no vacation days for attorneys anyway.

like

If you're in CA they have to.

like

I think some states require it. NY does not though

like

Which state?

like

This is the correct answer. If it’s silent, then they have to pay you out. But if they have something in the handbook, you’re bound to whatever they chose

They do not if ur an attorney

like

Depends on the state/ employment handbook. Colorado, employers must pay out unused vacation under the law.

I’m in New York. I’ve got $80k just sitting in my savings account. I can’t afford to buy a place in NY. I’ve considered getting a house or condo in Orlando area since we vacation there quite a bit and I know I can rent out (assuming it’s approved for short term). Would it make sense to buy a place in FL and rent in NY?

Hey there,

I am in TAC for a fairly large networking company. I am making 48k a year with decent benefits and unlimited PTO. I love working at this company and my boss is fantastic. However, I feel as though I am being underpaid given my credentials. I have my CCNA and almost have my CWNA. I am coming up on a year at the company and want to start either negotiating higher pay or looking elsewhere. What should I do and how should I go about it?

Question on 'unlimited PTO'. My last place had this w/was no set rules, we 1st had regular vacay days but when it went to unlimited it was a 'we're adults' understanding to not abuse it. If people used too much, their manager would talk w/them but in general we felt empowered to use it. My new place said at hiring it was unlimited pto, but I've now learned we can't take more than 5 consecutive days & should be ok w it bc they 'give us the weekends so it's really 9 days'. Is this common?

Do industry accountants take vacations that are 2 weeks+? I rarely see my clients go on a long vacation but that’s probably due to the audit cycle so I’m curious. Even on Christmas Break some of them are already sending emails on the 26th.

For those that got COVID, how much time off did you take from work to fully recover? I still have it and took 5 days but not sure if I take more than that is pushing it. I can WFH and do work but I’m scared if I go back to the grind of stressful work and long hours it’ll delay my recovery.

A few months ago I asked the question about using travel smart routers to host a VPN to disguise your location. The purpose of this is to have a working vacation in a foreign country, without telling work about it. My work computer has restricted access so I cannot install a VPN service on the computer without help from IT. My work around is a smart router that can directly host a VPN. Now I am in Cabo with a VPN to the US. I’ve included some details in a comment below. AMA

If you’ve ever had to do a doc review exercise with time pressure, did you get paid overtime or were you just expected to do extra hours?

My firm keeps putting pressure on us to do more hours but giving nothing in exchange! (No overtime pay nor extra time off).

Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

Have you ever given honest feedback to a company when leaving? For example the d&i initiatives leadership is taking has lead to joking about common racial stereotypes in office whenever an update is sent. I’m not used to those comments being said so freely for all to hear and fear they’d hire a minority (as part of those initiatives) in my place and subject them to that. I’m not sure what there is to gain but wanted to get other points of view.

Is it normal to be threatened to be fired after making mistakes that you had no idea were mistakes in the first place?
I’m a junior litigation associate at a small firm, and the managing partner says things like “you aren’t providing value to the firm” or “you’re being paid to avoid mistakes like these” when I make mistakes due to, what I believe, to be a lack of guidance and instruction. As in, they could be easily avoided with a “please keep in mind X” or something like that. Thoughts?

I recently (August 2021) took a job in-house in Houston after leaving a firm. My partner lives in LA but freelances so the decision was to take a good in-house job and then he would move to Houston and work remote. However, he’s started to get great directing and editing gigs in LA and now it seems impractical for him to move to Houston or even split time. I love my company but their HQ is in houston and they won’t allow remote work. Continued in comments…

Partner and I disagree about usage of case law. Throughout my career, I’ve cited a case that has good/applicable law but may not have the ultimate factual finding that supports my position.
