Thank you. It's discouraging. The public education is free but wow can it get far from appropriate. For moderate to severe classrooms, I don't like the "staff to student ratio" plan. One student with challenging behaviors can easily require more staff intervention (two on one) which short hands the educational benefit for other students and creates more stress for staff.
I would hope that there would be such legislation for both mild/mod and mod/severe self contained classes but I’m doubtful. It seems lucky that additional monies are coming to programs. And I will say that caseloads limits for “RSP” are not held to. I’ve taught for 30+ years and this is the first year my numbers haven’t been excessive with no additional help.
There is legislation about self-contained classes in Illinois, however nothing about cases of severity. We have a behavior room and I personally think there should be separate legislation about that and life skills. I can try to find the link for the legislation, its on the isbe website.
Thank you!
I have 36 kids in my caseload and no aides. It’s ridiculous. There have been many times over the years where I had over 40 with only one aide, and one year where I had almost SIXTY kids in my caseload with one aide. And the district expects to see growth in these kids (under those conditions)?!?
Great question. I work in a mod/severe middle school SDC class and have always wondered the same thing. I’m sure it will be dependent upon staff to student ratios.
I teach in a middle school resource room which is really an IEP ELA class. They keep qualifying students so they can get more help in SPED, but the gen ed classes have TAs and I only rarely have a para. I've had up to 23 students in class while the gen ed teachers topped out at 28.
Our sped classes are larger that the gen Ed classes and we are low on paras and teachers. Our caseloads are close to 40. The union just managed to get us extra money per child but it doesn’t help with the added paperwork and ppt meetings which takes away from time with the students.
I thought severe AUT was capped at 10 and non categorical at 12. I have 8 currently and I’m getting a new student. That’s the biggest class I have had in years. I do have three paras.
