Does anyone know of an area of law, or position where you're called to the scene of an emergency? Or, a situation where you need to be at an event?

I'm getting restless, sitting in an office, or working from home. I want to be in the middle of chaos (this is the reason I like litigation).

I've actually considered this before..... I may look into it now!

Firms that act as “crisis counsel” will often get called immediately to the scene of a catastrophic event to preserve evidence, find witnesses, and get experts

They're quite rare but there might be some in NYC that are worth looking aT?

It’s not always “chaos” but municipal law will have you out of the office a lot. You’ll need to think on your feet, address a wide variety of issues, attend meetings at client municipality’s location. That said, you will work a fair amount of evenings. Which can be tough…but I’ve found the trade off is I work hardly any weekends.

Certain rotations in prosecutors offices

I second prosecutors offices. I handled the child abuse and sexual violence cases in the office I was at for a few years. I would go to interviews at all hours (typically late at night) for sexual assaults. I would also meet the victims at the hospital to check and make sure they were ok and to ensure evidence was properly collected, etc. by the hospital.

I would watch the interviews of the victim or alleged perpetrator at the police station as well and then either the interviewer would have an ear mic where I could ask him/her to ask additional questions or he/she would take a break and pop in next door and ask me if I wanted any follow-up questions asked.

For crimes against children it is best that they are only interviewed once. So, all of the relevant agencies would convene together to watch the interview from another room and all would be given a chance to ask for additional questions to be asked if needed.

The police, child protection agency, prosecutor, etc. would all be there together. This helped minimize any chance of leading questions and helped minimize repetition fatigue where the child stops talking after repeating answers over and over to different people.

It was very intense work, though. I handled those cases before I had a child. I don’t know if I could have kept doing those cases when my son was little. It hits too close to home to be objective.

My view of the world was also super cynical when I first transitioned out of that line of work, too. Facing the worst of people all day and seeing them keep committing crimes over and over again and hurting your community can be tough.

But, I loved trying cases - particularly domestic violence cases. There is no victory quite like a victory over a chronic abuser who has manipulated a victim for years and is finally held accountable.

Crisis management is the closest I can think of, but that’s still mostly sitting in an office AFAIK

I have a few questions for people in consulting roles (both external/internal).

My partner is in corporate banking, but he wants to switch to a consulting/strategy-based role. I noticed people with those jobs typically have an MBA, and also majority of the job ads in similar roles has MBA as either a requirement or preferred qualification. So:

1) does MBA actually improve someone's chance in getting those roles?
2) are there any good Canadian MBA programs you'd recommend?

Thank you all!
