Does anyone know someone who left public and entered into a coding bootcamp? I'm thinking about doing it

I’m in SF and of my personal friends, probably only 1 out of 6 have a success story from the coding boot camp. Half the others actually went back to their original industry and the other half are in pretty mediocre coding jobs, and constantly switching around cuz they can’t find anything they like. It probably beats being a staff or early senior, but not high senior- manager. Take all stories with a grain of salt; that industry isn’t a guaranteed home run but as with all things, doesn’t hurt to give it a shot

Do it. Immerse in it though. It's your life for the duration - dividends will be huge

The true success stories of software engineering nowadays (the guys making $140k+) are either super super rare, or have actually gone through years of actual CS university level education.

like

Wait! 140k+ is coder pay? I'm close to 130k now as a Senior in consulting. I thought coders got paid way more?

like

Most coders make over 100k when they gain experience, never work over 40 a week, never weekends, most can work remotely depending on the job.

like

EY2 - lol nope, the top 5-10% of coders (google/Facebook) make way more, but same can be said of any job. The average coder, from my personal experience, hovers around $140-160k. And that is actual engineers who studied for 4-5 years of CS. Unless you’re VERY smart, the coding bootcamp is gonna spit you out at around $90-110k. (My estimate based on social circle, prove me wrong).

The bottom line: CS gets you to a high salary very quickly compared to shitty staff/senior salaries. However, the potential for significant gains ($200k+ salaries) are far easier to reach in PA compared to CS. What do you guys think?

like

I hear job prospects aren't great after?

From whom? We have a unique situation being consultants to not only use the skills we gain but use them to market ourselves after.

The job listings on DICE are crazy high.

@EY3 you’re correct in your estimate out of boot camp and that’s depending on a high COL. However, once you get that first job the 4 year degree matters less(similar to most jobs) and the side projects/experience you have in your portfolio can get you to that higher salary. You don’t believe that you can get a higher paying salary after a few years coding by getting an MBA? CS and Accounting background is a good mix for consulting

EY4 I can believe anything, and what you say definitely sounds like it could be true. The question is, what personal examples do you know of? Because I’m just saying, I have dozens of engineer friends who all studied CS, and none of them put high worth on the people coming out of boot camps anymore. Five years ago you could pull it off, but not today

@EY3 I don’t have dozens of examples. But I do have family members and their friends in CS from Ivy League institutions. But hey, I guess everyone has their own opinion

Yeah that’s great but the question is what do they think of the boot camp graduates ? Honest question
