Can’t speak to NYC, but our staff attorneys do exactly the same thing as the associates, they are just paid less and are not on partnership track.
Agree with A1. We have some staff attorneys here and I am pretty sure that’s the case. Billable requirement is not that much less (maybe the same) vs a regular associate. In theory they are supposed to be a position above a paralegal but below a regular associate. In practice they do similar work to a regular associate, just not on a partnership track. Maybe the barrier to getting hired is easier in terms of school rankings or grade?
Highly unlikely to lead to biglaw associate position in NYC. I know we have staff attorneys, but I don’t know who they are, where they sit or what they do.
We had a couple of staff attorneys a few years ago - they did the same things as associates in their class year, but were non-partnership track and were paid significantly less. I believe at least one of them was eventually offered an associate position, and she later left for another law firm (associate position afaik).
