Does anyone know what criteria determines how restrictive of a setting students are placed in?? I’m a preschool sped teacher in a 12:1 room and some of my students are verbal with a 25% delay while others are fully nonverbal with more than a 50% delay in multiple areas. How were they all recommended for a 12:1 instead of a 10:1 or 8:1??

What I hate about preschool sped at least in NY is that for entry it’s a district admin that has never met the child that makes the placement recommendation based on reading the initial evaluation reports, and then to get them moved to a different setting it’s so hard for the teaching team and therapists to convince the district admin to move them at the annual re-eval meeting 🤦🏼‍♀️

They put them in 12:1 because it's only a click of a mouse to them. If you know it needs to be different you need to communicate that to someone or have them spend time with the kids in a group.

School psychologists and district and/or school culture makes that determination. The law says all students should be educated together to the greatest extent possible.

You should have at least 2 EAs for that many.

Yes all the classrooms in my school have 2 assistant teachers, whether they’re 12:1, 10:1, or 8:1

Placement is not up to one person in my district. It’s a team decision based on lots of data.

I’m in a state/district where they stack ‘em deep and teach ‘em cheap - even all sped classes.

Texas is right behind you- not kidding 22 kids in Pre- K and Kinder classes up to 24.

Finished interviewing for an ATS role at Microsoft Wednesday. The interviewers said they were recommending me but I haven’t gotten any feedback from the recruiter. I’m at PwC S& and in consulting I always got at least a verbal yes day of or next day after interviewing. Does anyone know how long this usually takes? Do you get a verbal first or do they wait to have a contract?

Additional Posts in Special Education Teachers

Parents want to send their children back to school not only for educational purposes but also for social interactions. I do understand that many children want that interaction with their friends and teachers. But I don't think it is going to be quite as rewarding as many think with social distancing and face coverings to be safe. No high fives, pats on the back, sharing earbuds to listen to a new song, or consoling an upset friend. Even facial expressions are lost. Tough times.

I went to my GE science teachers and asked for a comprehensive list of what is taught in biology in our GE classes. My goal is to take the main ideas and bring the concepts down to the level of my students to keep them moving at a similar rate. I was told they do not feel they can share that with me because we do not have our class assignments for next year yet.

SSSOOOO...can anyone help me come up with a Biology Concept list?

Just wanted to share this with people who would understand. Had 4 IEP meetings last week. When the case manager asked one mother if she had any concerns she said her only concern was that her kindergarten son with autism loved me so much she was afraid of him being promoted and being out of my room. I told her not to worry, in our program I will have him for 2 more years. Boy that made me feel good.

Interested in knowing thoughts of others about Sped Pre-K, low cognitive, having to be taught compound words, syllables, and spacing between words before they know colors, follow one steps, numbers, etc. No problem exposing them to it, but feel focus should be on prerequisite skills.
